We are searching for a talented and qualified optometrist to join our growing practice. As an optometrist, you will be expected to use your skills and knowledge to provide high-quality vision care to our patients. Your duties will include conducting eye examinations, prescribe corrective lenses, and determine patients’ visual alertness.
To qualify for this role, you must be state-licensed and possess in-depth knowledge of eye-related disorders, conditions, and treatment. The ideal candidate will be customer service oriented with excellent analytical and communication skills.
MedNorth Health Center is a federally qualified health center located in Wilmington starting up vision services. We are adding vision services to our comprehensive medical, dental and behavioral health services and need a 20 hour/week optometrist. We are looking for someone to be here at least 4 hours per day, Monday thru Friday and some Saturdays but we have flexibility with the schedule. Our equipment will be new, and state of the art. We have an EMR for documentation and you will be able to hire your own technician. MedNorth is an equal opportunity employer.
SUMMARY:
Direct and provide outpatient care to clinic patients and ensure quality assurance including examination of patient's eyes, sight testing, diagnosis of visual disorders and diseases, determining course of treatment, providing and supervising appropriate treatment for such diseases, including glaucoma, cataract and diabetes.
Optometrist Responsibilities:
- Perform thorough routine eye inspections.
- Identify the patient’s visual alertness, field of vision, and hand-eye coordination.
- Diagnose sight problems, such as nearsightedness and color blindness.
- Prescribe corrective lenses and medications.
- Maintain accurate medical files for all patients.
- Promote eye health by teaching patients about proper eye care techniques.
- Identify and assess eye defects and diseases such as diabetes and liver failure.
- Record all diagnosis and treatment plans including transfers and therapeutic prescriptions.
- Perform other duties, as needed, by the physicians to provide the highest level of ophthalmic care to each of our patients
- Participate in quality assurance, quality improvement and utilization review
- Examine the eyes of patients of all ages to detect signs of injury, disease, abnormality or vision defects
- Examine eyes and fitting spectacles or contact lenses
- Write referral communications to doctors
- Reading retinal scans
- Prescribe medicines for people with eye conditions
- Participate in the development of clinic protocols and procedures to ensure quality eye care
- Participate in utilization and peer review programs which evaluates the quality of the optometry staff and services being performed at the clinics
Optometrist Requirements:
- Doctor of optometry (O.D.) degree from an accredited optometry school
- Must possess a state-issued license for O.D. and optometry.
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience as an Optometrist.
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
- In-depth knowledge of eye-related disorders and conditions.
- Proficiency with modern eye care techniques and equipment
- Customer service oriented with excellent analytical skills.
- Current CPR certification
- DEA license
Preferred:
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
- Experience/familiarity with Practice Management and Electronic Medical Records systems, Epic preferred
REQUIRED SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES:
- Experience/familiarity with computers, Microsoft Office products (Word/Excel), business e-mail communication systems and internet search capabilities

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods of time. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is required to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds, use manual dexterity for clinical or office equipment, and communicate effectively in person and electronically. The special vision requirements for this job are close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors). The employee must also perform duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

MedNorth Health Center provides comprehensive health care services, inside a multi-cultural medical/dental clinic, to all individuals; insured, uninsured, and underinsured. The building is heated in winter and air conditioned in the summer with noise levels of moderate to loud. We serve patients who speak multiple languages and who may need the assistance of an interpreter. In this position one may be subject to exposure to copier toner, correction fluid, bright fluorescent lighting, and continuous personal computer exposure.
