Single Family Office Controller - CPA

We are a single-family office based in Wilmington, NC. Our team provides comprehensive financial management, tax optimization, deal structuring, and reporting services to support the family's investment activities and strategic decision-making.
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced CPA to join our family office as the Controller. The Family Office Controller will lead financial reporting, cash management, tax planning, and compliance functions. This role will work closely with our external CPA firm to review and analyze partnership tax matters, while also overseeing internal financial operations and investor relations. This role needs someone advanced knowledge in partnership tax and investments.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage all aspects of financial reporting, including preparing GAAP-compliant financial statements, cash flow projections, and budget-to-actual analyses
- Oversee cash management, treasury functions, and capital call/distribution processes
- Collaborate with external CPA firm to review and analyze partnership tax returns, K-1s, and other compliance filings prepared by the firm
- Review and analyze key partnership tax filings, including 1065, 754, 1031, and more.
- Provide guidance on the tax implications of partnership agreements, operating agreements, and transaction documents
- Ensure compliance with Sections 704(b), 704(c), 743(b), 754, and other key partnership tax provisions
- Provide sophisticated financial modeling and analysis to optimize investment performance, tax efficiency, and risk-adjusted returns for the family office
- Serve as primary point of contact for lenders and other key stakeholders, providing timely and accurate financial information
- Develop and monitor internal controls, financial policies, and operating procedures to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and compliance
- Work with deal teams to structure, negotiate, and close transactions, always focusing on maximizing investor outcomes
- Coordinate tax planning, 1031 exchanges, and cost segregation studies to optimize tax outcomes
- Manage relationships with appraisers, insurance brokers, and other third-party service providers
- Mentor and develop accounting and finance team members
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field and active CPA license
- 7+ years of progressive experience in tax accounting and analysis, 10+ years preferred
- Deep knowledge of partnership tax compliance.
- Strong technical skills in tax research, compliance, and planning for partnerships
- Proven track record as a Controller or similar leadership role
- Strong analytical and modeling skills with the ability to evaluate investment opportunities and financing structures to maximize risk-adjusted returns
- Expertise in cash management, treasury, and partnership accounting
- Proficiency with Excel and enterprise-level accounting software (e.g. MRI, Yardi)
- Strong business acumen and understanding of real estate private equity
- Polished communication and relationship-building abilities
- Exposure to family office operations, private wealth management, and multi-generational dynamics
