Data Visualization Analyst

Global Support and Development is seeking to hire a Data Visualization Analyst within our Programs section. The position is full-time and located at HQ in Charlotte, N.C. Reporting to our Information Manager, The Analyst will leverage expertise in data visualization tools to develop, design, and modify analytical dashboards and reporting systems. The Analyst will create intuitive and visually engaging dashboards to analyze and visualize data from damage and needs assessment surveys, as well as all other relevant data necessary for disaster preparedness and response operations. The incumbent will work alongside other Information team members, internal stakeholders, and partners, ensuring data is transformed into clear, actionable insights through high-quality visual design. - Review, clean, and prepare raw data for visualization, ensuring data quality, consistency, and readiness for analysis and dashboard creation.
- Validate and ensure the accuracy of data consumed from various systems for reporting and visualization purposes.
- Interpret data, analyze results using statistical techniques, and provide ongoing reports, focusing on translating complex data into understandable visual narratives.
- Communicate proactively with relevant stakeholders to identify visualization needs, gather requirements, and validate data outputs.
- Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns in complex data sets, recommending the most appropriate visual representation for maximum impact and clarity.
- Prepare comprehensive reports (e.g. presentations, documents) that effectively communicate trends, patterns, and predictions using static visualizations, emphasizing strong visual storytelling and graphic selection within a structured reporting format.
- Design and develop advanced, interactive Tableau dashboards, incorporating calculated fields, parameters, sets, and dashboard actions for dynamic user experiences.
- Manage and administer Tableau Cloud sites, including user and group permissions, data source publishing, scheduled refreshes, and content organization.
- Create Mapbox maps for Tableau, as needed, to enhance geospatial analysis.
- Create comprehensive documentation for developed dashboards, visualizations, and associated data sources, ensuring maintainability and knowledge transfer.
- Prompt and action GSD’s core values of accountability, humility, and integrity in all work conducted.
- Promote good stewardship of financial and other resources to achieve maximum benefit to those impacted by disaster or at risk of impact.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Three (3) years of relevant work experience in Data Analysis and Visualization, with a strong portfolio showcasing compelling data visualizations and dashboard designs.
- Two (2) or more years of advanced, hands-on experience using Tableau Desktop and Tableau Cloud, including dashboard development, data source publishing, and performance optimization
- Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, Programming, Graphic Design with a focus on Data Visualization, or a related field; or
- Equivalent combination of relevant experience and training.
- Tableau Desktop Specialist or Certified Associate certification highly desired;
- Tableau Cloud Certified Associate certification is a plus;
- Certified Analytics Professional or similar desired; and
- Project management certification desired.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and demonstrated expertise in data preparation techniques (e.g. Power Query, Tableau Prep) to transform raw data into a usable format for visualization.
- Demonstrated expertise in analyzing data and creating high-quality, interactive dashboards using Tableau, showing an eye for visual design, effective chart selection, and user experience.
- Proficiency in at least one other major interactive data visualization tool (e.g. Power BI, Qlik Sense, Looker Studio, D3.js).
- Proficiency in designing and preparing high-quality static graphics for integration into presentations and documents, ensuring adherence to visual design best practices.
- Proficiency in designing and preparing high-quality static graphics using graphic design software (e.g. Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Figma) for integration into presentations and documents, ensuring adherence to visual design best practices.
- Proficiency in Tableau Cloud administration, including managing users, groups, permissions, projects, data sources, and scheduled tasks.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace products.
- Experience in written communication such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Reports, and/or Manuals.
- Excellent report writing and analytical skills with meticulous attention to detail and data accuracy.
- Ability to adapt to rapidly changing priorities and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Effective communication skills to present and advocate for data-driven insights, advanced visualization concepts, and best practices in data quality to GSD staff and partners.
- Understanding of disaster risk reduction and humanitarian response concepts and approaches (preferred).
- Written and verbal proficiency in French and/or Spanish is highly desirable.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to rapidly shift tasks.

- Work is performed in an office setting and is generally sedentary, but may involve movement (e.g., walking, standing or otherwise being mobile throughout the office) for brief periods of time;
- Ability to use hands, reach, and independently lift and move items weighing up to 20 pounds, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects;
- Ability to bend and stoop;
- Ability to sit and view a computer screen for extended periods of time;
- Ability to demonstrate manual dexterity to operate computer and other office equipment;
- Ability to communicate effectively with others.
- May be regularly exposed to and required to work in varying outdoor weather conditions, including extreme heat or cold, heavy rainfall, and other extreme weather events;
- May be required to engage in irregular travel and / or work schedules, which may include extended hours exceeding 8 or 12 hours in a day for prolonged periods outside of the control of the individual;
- While wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) which is required and provided by GSD:
- Work may be conducted near moving mechanical parts, which could include exposure to loud noises;
- Work may be conducted near and include potential exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals; or
- Work may be conducted in areas that include exposure to the risk of electrical shock or vibration.
- Ability to obtain necessary travel documents and fulfill any other travel requirements (including an active passport, visa requirements, vaccinations, etc.);
- This role may include deployments to support natural disaster response efforts within hazardous, dynamic, and unstable environments (economically/environmentally) in pre- and post- disaster scenarios, which could include, among other conditions: lack of access to medical care, exposure to critical incidents (including severe injury, death, traumatic encounters, and/or mental strain), and uncommon sleeping arrangements (i.e. not in a hotel, could include close living quarters and cohabitation);
- GSD’s nutritional environment contains milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat products. Ability to make dietary accommodations may be limited. Potential exposure to food borne allergens; and
- Employees may be required for this role to work upon our Humanitarian Vessel for up to 30 consecutive days. The vessel’s working environment entails performing in conditions inherent to vessel travel, including but not limited to: steep and narrow stairs and living spaces, close quarters including cohabitation, sharp surfaces, metal gangways and ladders, heavy doors, European-type plugs and wiring (220-240v, 60Hz) which cannot support all American appliances, in addition to bright and flashing lights, loud noises, nuts and shellfish exposure, poor weather, movements which can trigger motion sickness, and / or limited access to hospital / definitive care. This setting involves various sea conditions, including but not limited to rough seas, adverse weather, and potential for sea sickness.
- Ability to perform work indoors in an office environment;
- Ability to work a varied schedule to complete projects and meet deadlines in response to changing demands;
- Ability to travel to attend meetings, industry or professional association conferences and stay overnight as required.
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for up to 50% of the time;
