Salary offers for the selected candidate are based on the candidate's education and experience related to the position, as well as our agency budget and equity. The Public Protection Section (PPS) provides direct assistance to the people of North Carolina through policy, education, outreach, and litigation. PPS educates citizens about the justice system. It helps develop policy and legislation regarding public safety issues, provides crime prevention and victims assistance programs, connects citizens with community resources, and works with other agencies to coordinate Department of Justice services for the people of North Carolina. It also works on litigation matters related to similar topics. The Press Assistant will be a member of the Department of Justice's communications team, reporting to the Communications Director and supporting the team's efforts to communicate the work of the department and the Attorney General to serve the people of North Carolina. The Press Assistant will enhance NCDOJ's social and digital presence and play a key public service role in educating and engaging people. This position will draft, create, and publish timely information and content about NCDOJ's work and impact across digital platforms, and bolster the office's communications strategy through additional mediums. This position will also provide support for the communications team and other sections in the Attorney General's Office and Public Protection Section, as needed. Social and Digital Media Management This position will support the Department's Social and Digital Media Management. Social and Digital Media support will include:- Create and manage the social media for the organization, including the primary platforms of Facebook, X (formerly known as Twitter), Instagram, Threads, YouTube, and LinkedIn.
- Film and produce graphics, videos, data, stories, and other media for online and media communications.
- Create and circulate an editorial planning calendar for social platforms that includes content on news stories, office announcement, consumer alerts, and other relevant information. Execute on the editorial calendar by maintain a regular cadence of postings.
- Manage the online community, including reading and responding to constituent comments and messages to provide consumer and constituent resources.
- Gather data and report on metrics of social media platforms for analysis.
- Generate new ideas for social and digital platform content.
- Serve as the website editor.
- Organize photos and digital assets from event and meeting coverage.
- Perform related work as required.
- Compile and send daily news clips and provide additional media monitoring reports as necessary.
- Coordinate and support press events.
- Draft press releases and letters from the office as needed.
- Send press releases from the office email or CRM account.
- Maintain and update media lists.
- Provide key administrative and organizational support to the communications department on various tasks and special events.
- Draft and send media advisories to appropriate press lists.
- Pitch events and story ideas to reporters and news stations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
- General knowledge of journalistic, communication, and/or publication principles and practices.
- General knowledge of the techniques of disseminating information to the public through a variety of news media.
- Ability to write according to correct English usage and accepted standards of magazine and press publications.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with representatives of press, radio, and television and other persons contacted in the course of work.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, public affairs, journalism, English, or related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
