Dimensional Inspection Specialist — Automotive Metal Fabrication A day in this role

At IFAB Corp, you’ll be the final safeguard between precision engineering and our customers. Your morning might begin on the stamping line, confirming first-off parts against prints and GD&T. By midday, you could be measuring a machined feature set on a CMM, coaching an operator on gage use, or verifying coating thickness on a freshly powder-coated assembly. Before the day closes, you’ll document results, help contain a nonconformance, and support a quick root-cause review.

What you’ll handle Process-focused inspection and measurement

• Stamping, Forming & Laser: Check for splits, cracks, wrinkles, excessive burrs, die marks, distortion, springback, edge quality, flatness, bend angles, and dimensional variation.
• Weld Inspection: Visually evaluate weld size, location, profile, porosity, undercut, spatter, burn-through, cracks, distortion, fit-up, and overall workmanship.
• CNC Machining: Verify dimensional accuracy, hole size, thread quality, surface finish, and critical-to-quality characteristics.
• E‑Coat & Powder Coat: Confirm coverage, dry film thickness, adhesion, cure, color, gloss, contamination, orange peel, craters, chips, bare spots, and runs using thickness gages and visual standards.
• CMM Operation: Operate CMM equipment and execute established CMM programs as required.

Quality control and containment

• Perform receiving, first-piece/first-off, first article (FAI), in-process, last-piece/last-off, final, rework, and containment inspections.
• Identify, tag, segregate, and document nonconforming material (NCRs).
• Lead or assist in containment to stop defects from advancing to the next operation or the customer.
• Support root cause and corrective actions using 5-Why, Fishbone diagrams, Pareto analysis, 8D, and CAPA.

Documentation, traceability, and support

• Record inspection results in quality systems, ERP, Excel logs, layout reports, and SPC records with accuracy.
• Maintain full traceability for inspected parts, raw materials, and purchased components.
• Support PPAP, APQP, control plan verification, and customer-specific documentation.
• Verify incoming raw materials against purchase orders, drawings, and Certificates of Conformance.
• Coach operators on defect recognition, gage use, inspection requirements, and reaction plans.
• Support internal, customer, and layered process audits (IATF 16949 / ISO 9001 compliance).

About you Required qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or GED required; technical certification in manufacturing, quality, metrology, machining, welding, or a related field preferred.
• Experience: 2+ years in quality inspection within manufacturing (automotive, metal fabrication, stamping, welding, machining, or coating preferred).
• Technical skills:
  • Fluent in reading blueprints, engineering drawings, and GD&T (ASME Y14.5), plus work instructions and control plans.
  • Hands-on use of precision tools: calipers, micrometers, height gages, plug/thread/bore/go/no -go gages, and fixtures.
• Systems: Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Excel, ERP, or QMS data entry).
• Soft skills: Meticulous attention to detail, sound judgment, and confidence making accurate pass/fail calls under pressure.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience with CMM systems or running programs (PC‑DMIS, Calypso, MCOSMOS, CMM Manager).
• Background with advanced metrology tools (FARO Arm, Hexagon arm, optical comparator, profilometer).
• Weld inspection training or certifications (AWS, CWI, CAWI).
• Ability to review material certifications and supplier inspection records.
