Job Overview:
Pamlico Animal Hospital is a busy, small animal veterinary practice in Washington, NC, and we are looking for full-time, dependable, motivated individuals to join our team as veterinary assistants.
Veterinary assistants play a critical role in patient care, animal handling, hospital cleanliness, and client communication. This is a physically demanding, fast-paced position that requires focus, efficiency, and the ability to multitask throughout the day.

- Full-time position
- Flexible schedule required
- Must be available to work any assigned shift, including those starting as early as 7:00 AM and those ending at 9:00 PM
- Weekend and holiday availability required for all team members
- Applicants must meet all qualifications listed below to be considered

What to Expect:
Working in veterinary medicine is rewarding, but it is also demanding. This is not a "puppies and kittens all day" position. It requires consistent hard work, emotional resilience, and attention to detail.
You will encounter:
- Exposure to bodily fluids, feces, and strong odors
- Potential bites and scratches
- Exposure to contagious diseases
- Busy days with shifting priorities and multiple responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities:
- Patient Care: Walk, feed, change litter, monitor hospitalized patients, and report changes in health or behavior
- Restraint: Safely and compassionately restrain patients, including anxious or aggressive animals
- Cleaning & Sanitation: Disinfect cages, runs, treatment areas, equipment, floors, and yards to prevent the spread of disease; assist with laundry and dishes
- Exam Room Support: Assist veterinarians during appointments; communicate clearly and professionally with clients
- Laboratory & Equipment: Collect and prepare lab samples (blood, urine, fecal, ear cytology); operate IDEXX equipment, assist with radiographs and cold laser therapy
- Pharmacy: Fill prescriptions, administer medications as directed, and provide client education per veterinarian's instructions
- Computer Work: Accurately document treatments, manage billing, and maintain patient records in our electronic system
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- Reliable transportation
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods
- Flexible scheduling, including weekends and holidays
- Strong work ethic and professional attitude
- Punctual and dependable
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
- Receptive to feedback and direction
- Compassion toward animals and people
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Self-motivated with a desire to continue learning and growing
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Basic computer proficiency
- Typing speed of at least 35 WPM with 95% or greater accuracy
