Transmission Engineer II or III

NOTE: this position may be filled at the Engineer II level or one level up as an Engineer III dependent upon the selected candidates qualifications. This position is responsible for creating and modifying high and medium voltage (500kV, 230kV, 115kV, 24kV and 13kV) design standards for use in Duke Energy Progress capital project designs. Looking for someone that can communicate and gather feedback from across a wide spectrum of work areas in our company and then translate that feedback into improved and new standards. Job Responsibilities The Production Standards Engineering team sets the technical direction and philosophy for design of the Duke Energy Progress transmission grid. This includes all aspects of engineering such as transmission line, substation physical, and protection and control areas. Work experience in any industry involving engineering design or construction management will be considered for this role as deep knowledge of high voltage parameters is not required. (Training will be provided!) Create and modify engineering drawings and templates to establish the standard for engineering designs for capital projects. CADD tool (MicroStation, AutoCadd, Bluebeam, Inventor, ACADe, Civil3D) user experience is a plus but not necessary as we offer training in that aspect of the role. Collaborate with the production engineering team and Construction and Maintenance teams to get feedback on designs and details of how we assemble the pieces and parts and get them to work properly during construction. This will involve being in the field during construction evolutions and in the office with the engineering teams during design evolutions. Study and understand long term service life probabilities, cost impacts and reliability of parts and system designs used in engineering. Assist in making decisions on parts and systems that would be the best choice given system parameters listed above. Determine and make decisions on how our designs will respond to code requirements. Examples include National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), National Electrical Code (NEC), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Underwriters Laboratory (UL), etc. as needed. Spending time reading, understanding and communicating codes will be a requirement. Understanding how the codes will impact design calculations will also be required. No prior knowledge or experience necessary in this area. Work within the materials acquisition tool to get standard parts identified, created, and approved in the system for use by engineering design teams Basic Qualifications Engineer II Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program. Two years minimum required of engineering design or construction management experience. (Utility experience not required.) A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree. Engineer III Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program. Four years minimum required of design engineering or construction management experience. (Utility experience not required.) A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree. #LI-PG1 Preferred Qualifications Passed the Engineering fundamentals exam and interested in licensure as a Professional Engineer Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills. Experience in the utility industry. Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse skill set of team-mates. Work Conditions Hybrid - two days per week minimum in the office in Raleigh, NC to collaborate with team-mates. Day travel to work sites as needed. Flexible daily work schedules are available.
