Dean of Students

Location/Schedule: Winston-Salem, NC, on-site; 12 month position, Monday - Friday, typically 7:15am - 3:15pm. Requires flexibility for meetings, training, state testing windows, and occasional after-school events.

Dean of Students plays a vital role in creating a school where scholars feel safe, supported, challenged, and valued. As a key member of the school leadership team, this position sits at the intersection of student success, school culture, and academic accountability. The Dean of Students leads trauma-informed behavior supports, oversees Section 504 compliance, coordinates state testing programs, and partners with staff, families, and community stakeholders to ensure every scholar has the opportunity to thrive.

This role is ideal for a leader who believes that strong relationships, high expectations, and consistent support create the foundation for student success. By promoting a positive school culture, leading systems of support, and ensuring compliance with state and federal requirements, the Dean of Students helps shape an environment where scholars can grow academically, socially, and emotionally.

Hiring Range : $58,000 to $70,000 annually

Education/Experience/Licensure

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, School Administration, K-12 Education, or a related field.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in School Leadership, Counseling, or Educational Administration.
  • Licensure: Valid North Carolina educator or administrator license preferred, but not required.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years of successful experience in student services, school leadership, behavioral intervention, or a related educational leadership role in a K–12 setting.
  • A relevant combination of education and experience may be considered.

Key Responsibilities

School Culture & Behavior Management

  • Lead implementation of a trauma-informed school culture focused on safety, consistency, accountability, and belonging.
  • Utilize the Sanctuary Model and restorative practices to support positive student outcomes.
  • Address disciplinary concerns with fairness, consistency, and equity.
  • Develop proactive behavior support systems and interventions.
  • Analyze discipline and behavioral data to identify trends and improvement opportunities.
  • Facilitate restorative conferences, re-entry meetings, and behavior intervention planning.
  • Support teachers through coaching, de-escalation strategies, and classroom management guidance.

Testing Coordination & NCDPI Compliance

  • Serve as the school's official Testing Coordinator.
  • Ensure compliance with all NCDPI testing regulations and security protocols.
  • Coordinate EOGs, EOCs, benchmark assessments, and alternative assessments.
  • Manage secure testing materials and testing logistics.
  • Train test administrators and proctors.
  • Coordinate accommodations for students with IEPs, 504 Plans, and EL services.
  • Analyze assessment results and collaborate with school leadership to support instructional planning.

Section 504 Coordination

  • Serve as the school's Section 504 Coordinator.
  • Manage referrals, evaluations, eligibility determinations, annual reviews, and documentation.
  • Facilitate Section 504 meetings with families and staff.
  • Ensure compliance with federal requirements.
  • Monitor implementation of accommodations.
  • Provide guidance and support to staff regarding accommodations and student needs.

MTSS & Student Support Services

  • Facilitate MTSS processes and team meetings.
  • Support implementation of Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III interventions.
  • Monitor intervention effectiveness through data analysis.
  • Collaborate with EC staff, counselors, specialists, and administrators.
  • Lead attendance improvement initiatives.
  • Coordinate support for at-risk scholars.

Leadership & Family Engagement

  • Serve as an active member of the School Leadership Team.
  • Build strong partnerships with students, families, and community stakeholders.
  • Support family engagement efforts.
  • Communicate effectively regarding student behavior, attendance, testing, and accommodations.
  • Assist with school improvement planning and crisis response efforts.
