*Description:*
WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY. The Writing Program invites applications for two permanent, non-tenure-track Assistant Teaching Professors to join our community of writing teachers. Position begins effective July 1, 2026.
*Qualifications**: *We welcome applications from teachers, writers, and scholars across Writing Studies and related fields who are passionate about the teaching of first-year writing (FYW). We are especially interested in applicants who have designed and taught innovative FYW courses. In addition to a commitment to FYW, we seek colleagues with a commitment to student-centric teaching and service. Successful applicants will demonstrate this commitment in their course design, grading and other teaching practices as well as their teaching philosophy and service record.
*Position Summary**:* Successful applicants will join a multidisciplinary Writing Studies faculty. Our faculty currently bring together expertise in Rhetoric, Communication, Literature, Creative Writing, Linguistics, Education, Journalism, and Environmental Justice and Sustainability. While the Writing Program has been housed in the Department of English, it is now on track to become an independent program with exciting curriculum possibilities. For a number of years, our program has been growing, due to increasing college enrollments, the phasing out of AP exemptions, the development of a FYW stretch sequence and a Writing minor, and a college-wide vote in support of an upper-level writing requirement.
Teaching load is 3/3 and consists primarily of the design and teaching of FYW, a seminar required for all undergraduate students. [FYW classes]( are capped at 16 students and cover a range of dynamic themes and approaches. Faculty will also have occasional opportunities to design and teach upper-level courses in our interdisciplinary writing minor. The role prioritizes teaching at 80%. The remaining 20% includes service work in the program and college; academic advising; and participation in professional development activities on campus and in the candidate's field. These positions include generous funding for professional development (including travel and fees for conferences and workshops, support for development of new courses, material resources related to teaching) and the opportunity for promotion.
