Packaging Manager – FDM Packaging

Location: Burlington, NC
Department: Supply Chain / Procurement
Reports To: Director of Inventory Planning and F&D Sales

Position Summary

The Packaging Manager is responsible for the procurement, development, and inventory management of all FDM Packaging. This role oversees packaging strategy from concept through implementation, including supplier selection, cost and delivery negotiations, inventory optimization, and team leadership. The position partners closely with Brand Management, Manufacturing, Engineering, and Finance to ensure packaging solutions meet quality, cost, and operational requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Packaging Inventory Management (15%)

• Analyze forecast and inventory data to determine optimal contract quantities

• Establish and maintain standard costs for all packaging items

• Minimize obsolete packaging inventory and manage reserve submissions

• Track, coordinate, and support disposition of obsolete materials

New Packaging Development & Implementation (30%)

• Research and evaluate potential packaging structures and materials

• Advise Brand Management on feasibility, plant capabilities, and production timelines

• Develop cost estimates and provide samples for proposed packaging

• Coordinate testing with Corporate and Plant Industrial Engineering

• Establish and approve quality standards for new packaging items

Packaging Specifications & Systems Management (25%)

• Develop, issue, and maintain packaging specifications across all brands

• Maintain Bills of Materials (Cullinet) and SAP Purchasing data

• Create purchase orders and resolve Accounts Payable issues

• Partner with Brand Management and Manufacturing on folding methods, packaging placement, and final product configuration

• Review print quality, sticker formats, fold samples, and WMS documentation

Supplier Management (20%)

• Manage Vendor Purchased Packaging (VPP) programs for assigned brands

• Select packaging suppliers based on printing and operational requirements

• Negotiate pricing, lead times, and delivery terms

• Approve artwork, print submissions, and supplier communications

• Provide performance feedback and maintain strong supplier relationships

• Conduct competitive bidding for new and existing packaging programs

Team Leadership (10%)

• Lead, train, and mentor the Packaging Analyst

• Develop skills and ensure cross-training of direct reports
