Job Description

I. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES :

Diagnoses and treats a variety of emotional and psychiatric disorders and co-occurring conditions, assisting clients from young adults to geriatrics in achieving social, emotional, and personal independence. The populations served include those with chronic mental illness, dual diagnosis, and substance abuse.

II. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS WITH REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION :

A. PRE-EMPLOYMENT EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, and REQUIREMENTS :

Doctorate in medicine (MD) from an accredited medical school. Successful completion of an approved residency in adult psychiatry and licensure are required. Two or more years of experience with individuals with serious mental illness and the ability to prescribe buprenorphine under DATA 2000 waiver is preferred.

Candidates must maintain current state licensure, controlled substances license, and DEA registration.

III. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS :

1. Conduct peer review and clinical risk management meetings.
2. Elicit and record patient histories to formulate diagnoses and treatments.
3. Conduct mental status examinations to monitor psychiatric status and inform treatment.
4. Order labs and procedures to monitor treatment effects and compliance.
5. Order assessments or consultations for diagnostic and treatment planning.
6. Perform semi-annual AIMS testing for patients on antipsychotics.
7. Encourage routine health examinations and coordinate care with other providers.
8. Prescribe and monitor psychotropic medications, discussing risks and benefits, and obtaining informed consent.
9. Integrate medical concerns into psychiatric care, considering drug interactions and medical complications.
10. Provide psychoeducation to patients and families.
11. Conduct individual, family, and group therapy as indicated.
12. Maintain documentation in electronic health records per policies.
13. Utilize e-prescribe features for prescriptions.
14. Prepare assessments and progress notes for clinical records.
15. Participate in treatment planning and have final approval.
16. Collaborate with other healthcare practitioners involved in patient care.
17. Perform emergency assessments and refer for inpatient treatment when necessary.
18. Coordinate care with inpatient providers.
19. Complete forms and documentation promptly.
20. Maintain professional and ethical conduct per policies and APA guidelines.
21. Prepare court-ordered treatment papers and testify in court when needed.
22. Supervise licensed practitioners as assigned.
23. Be available for emergency calls during evenings, weekends, and holidays.
24. Participate in committees and research activities as assigned.
25. Complete prescription refills timely.

IV. WORKING CONDITIONS :
