Environmental Health & Safety Specialist
- Serves as resident expert and authority on all occupational health and environmental health matters. Must possess working knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations and be able to maintain compliance in applicable areas and EHS programs.
- Ability to develop and implement a comprehensive EHS program. Program elements and tasks include policy and procedure planning and development, compliance, and annual reports.
- Proficient in creating, tracking, and completing short- and long-term departmental goals, objectives, and strategic planning initiatives to ensure compliance.
- Adept at developing and implementing effective communication strategies related to the EHS program with internal and external stakeholders.
- Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or and equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
- At least three years of experience working in areas of Occupational Heath, Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), and/or Industrial Hygiene (IH), preferably at a higher education institution. Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations, national standards and accepted best practices relating to Occupational Health, IAQ, and/or IH. Substantive expertise and experience in evaluation and control of hazardous conditions and the development of EHS programs to improve safety, workplace environments, as well as training others on how to keep and maintain safe and healthy work areas. Excellent presentation and training delivery skills and strong written and verbal communications skills required.
- Serves as resident expert and authority on all occupational health and environmental protection matters, and ensure NCCU maintains compliance in applicable areas and EHS programs.
- Manages the development, implementation and evaluation of the University’s environmental health and environmental programs to assist in maintaining a safe and secure environment for the NCCU community.
- Develops and directs short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans and policies, and operating procedures for proper occupational health programs and ensures NCCU remains in compliance with all local, state, and federal environmental and safety regulations.
- Assesses, monitors, and evaluates program effectiveness, and implements changes required for improvement.
- Prepares and maintains safety manuals and incident reports related to environmental health and safety.
- Participates in the capital planning process to ensure that environmental health and safety issues are properly identified, considered, and addressed.
- Responds to emergencies and assists in the investigation of accidental exposures of persons to hazardous substances.
- Develops occupational health programs, policies and procedures including, but not limited to, IAQ monitoring and remediation programs, IH monitoring and exposures, inspection programs and frequencies, industrial hygiene sampling, and environmental compliance. Promotes the importance of Environmental Health and Environmental Compliance, and fosters a university culture that integrates health, safety, and compliance in all areas.
- Provides technical expertise and support for all NCCU departments on regulatory and compliance issues regarding Occupational Health and Environmental Compliance.
- Assists faculty, staff, and students in designing processes, procedures, and operations that meet safety and environmental requirements and promote environmentally responsible and safe practices.
- Develops training programs for persons working with hazardous agents.
- Coordinates with the EHS Director to develop and implement effective communication strategies related to EHS Occupational Health and Environmental Safety programs.
- Collaborates with University faculty and staff to ensure the safety of all university areas by implementing occupational health and safety programs, conducting internal audits, coordinating services, and providing training.
- Interprets rules and regulations for NCCU students, faculty, and staff to ensure a culture of compliance and safety.
- As directed by the EHS Director, assists with liaison activities to governmental and regulatory agencies, such as OSHA, NC DHHS, DOL, OSFM, and other applicable regulatory agencies.
- Assists with the preparation of regulatory compliance reports and/or responses to external entities (e.g., city, county, state, UNC System, and/or federal inspection agencies).
