Sheet Metal Worker I
General Definition of Work
The sheet metal worker I, under general supervision, performs entry-level work with minimal decision-making discretion related to completing basic roof and metal repairs on buildings, occasionally in inclement weather. Additionally, the sheet metal worker I will be trained in the foundations of sheet metal work with the intention of being able to complete more complex repairs in the future. Employee performs both school-based and district-level work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the Maintenance Operations Supervisor I.

Place of Work
The normal place of work is on the premises used by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Charlotte- Mecklenburg Schools reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably require from time to time.
Essential Functions
- Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
- Assist Sheet-Metal worker II with fabricating and installing new metal roofing components including flashings, gravel stops, down spouts, gutters and air conditioning duct work
- Complete fundamental repair tasks for emergency leaks in building roofs
- Use jet-vac machine to unstop roof drains, catch basins, drainpipes
- Assist with the repair and installation of stainless-steel cafeteria equipment such as tray rails on serving lines, etc .
- Support fabrication, installation, and repair of ventilation and exhaust fans
- Repair conductor heads, security screens, & well house covers
- Support the installation of playground and sporting equipment
- Setup stages for special events such as graduations
- Be trained in and use a variety of sheet metal tools including soldering iron, drills, skill saw and related machines
- Be trained on and operate various shop equipment such as Shear, 10 ft. Hydraulic Brake, 10 ft. hand brake, magnetic brake, spot welder, Box Brake, Drill Press, Band Saw, Pittsburg and Pipe Lock Machine
- Perform related work as assigned or required
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Knowledge of basic methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the sheet metal trade
- Knowledge of safe work practices
- Knowledge of basic mathematics
- Ability to work from heights, including the roofs of typical school building
- Ability to lift heavy objects and perform heavy manual labor
- Ability to learn how to install ventilation of art kilns, dryers, and exhaust fans.
- Ability to learn how to custom fabrication for all shops on as needed basis.
- Ability to learn how to Install and repair of canopies.
- Ability to use or learn, operate, and maintain specialized tools, materials, and equipment used in sheet metal work and shop settings
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to solve problems by utilizing sound judgment
- Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules, guidelines, and procedures into daily business operations
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required
- One (1) year of sheet metal or roofing metal experience preferred
- Apprentice in Commercial sheet metal work preferred
- Equivalent combination of education and experience
Special Requirements
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, valid CDL Class A driver's license required
- Ability to obtain and maintain district-approved certification, state licensure, and various roofing product-specific certifications as required
- Possess and maintain a valid driver's license or ability to provide own transportation
- Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
