Position Summary:  The  Special Forces Engineer Instructor  is responsible for delivering classroom, practical, and field-based instruction in Special Operations Construction (SOC), military engineering, advanced demolitions, target analysis, breaching operations, UXO/IED procedures, and mission planning. This role trains, mentors, and evaluates Special Forces students on construction techniques, explosives calculations and placement, infrastructure development, sabotage operations, and tactical engineering skills through both academic and scenario-based field training exercises. The instructor develops and updates curriculum, lesson plans, and assessment materials while ensuring compliance with current Special Forces engineering doctrine and instructional standards. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Instruction and Evaluation 
  • Provide expert instruction on Special Operations Construction (SOC), including blueprint reading/design, masonry wall construction, concrete formwork/placement, plumbing, electrical wiring, and basic welding repairs. 
  • Teach advanced military demolitions, demolitions safety, calculation of net explosive weight (NEW), priming methods, firing systems, timber/steel-cutting charges, cratering charges, and urban/wall breaching. 
  • Instruct students in Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) and Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) procedures, covering color codes, UXO safeties, minefield clearing operations, subsurface hazard detectors, Homemade Explosives (HME) and precursors, Field Expedient Munitions (FEM), and Field Expedient Incendiaries (FEI). 
  • Teach Target Analysis (TA) techniques, demolition mission planning, identification of choke points, sabotage operations, damage assessment, and target folder development. 
  • Conduct courses using a variety of instructional practices and methods, including conventional classroom presentation techniques, practical exercises, and digital platforms (e.g., Blackboard, Adobe Connect).
  • Evaluate students' performance on written and hands-on performance-oriented examinations (such as Construction Examinations, Calculation and Placement of charges, UXO/IED Exams, and Target Analysis) according to the Individual Student Assessment Plan (ISAP). 
  • Evaluate student presentations for appropriate techniques and provide clear, timely, relevant, and specific feedback. Lead, evaluate, and mentor students during scenario-based Comprehensive Field Training (FTX) exercises, assessing their ability to apply engineering skills, Drop Zone (DZ) planning/operations, equipment rigging, and mission planning in a tactical environment. 

  • Curriculum and Classroom Management 
  • Coordinate curriculum development by assisting in the design of instructional blocks, providing guidance to other faculty members on academic standards and instructional objectives. 
  • Develop lesson plans, course materials, criterion-referenced performance tests, and self-instructional objectives. 
  • Review and update training material to ensure compliance with instructional design, emerging technologies, and current Special Forces engineering doctrine.
  • Teach Target Analysis (TA) techniques, demolition mission planning, identification of choke points, sabotage operations, damage assessment, and target folder development. 
  • Maintain a professional learning environment, managing classroom and range activities effectively to stimulate and sustain student motivation, engagement, and retention of skills. 
  • Evaluate student feedback to modify courses and methods of instruction. Evaluate peer instruction and the use of materials, requiring in-depth knowledge of theories of educational course development and academic methods. 
  • Identify deviations from policy on instructor training and certification and assist in corrective actions. 
  • Communicate terminal learning objectives, safety requirements, and risk levels in accordance with TF 600-21-1. 
  • Interpersonal Skills and Teamwork: Effectively communicate with staff, faculty, and students, fostering exchange of course information and instructional improvement. 
  • Meticulously grade hands-on exams, range safety execution, and adherence to administrative procedures. 
  • Must be adaptable to changing instructional requirements and diverse learner needs and anticipate and address impediments to learning and performance. 
  • Demonstrate expertise, respects intellectual property, and adheres to organizational and professional ethics. 
  • Conduct courses using a variety of instructional practices and methods, including conventional classroom presentation techniques, practical exercises, and digital platforms (e.g., Blackboard, Adobe Connect). 

Required Qualifications:

  • US Citizen 
  • Valid U.S. driver's license 
  • Must hold an active Secret Security Clearance
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) 
  • Clear and effective verbal and written communication 
  • Must be former prior Special Forces Army Green Beret 
  • At a minimum, must have obtained the rank of E-7, Warrant Officer, or Commissioned Officer.
  • Must possess or be able to complete the Common Faculty Developer-Instructor Course (CFD-IC) or equivalent military instructor training.
  • Must complete pre-employment physical examination, annual exams, background investigation, and urinalysis screening.
  • May be subject to Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel up to 25% of the time.
  • Must have served Honorably.
  • Must possess or be capable of completing the Common Faculty Developer-Instructor Course (CFD-IC) or equivalent military instructor training.
  • Must meet physical standards necessary to operate in rugged field environments, monitor tactical exercises, and stand for extended periods during outdoor training. 
  • At a minimum, must have obtained the rank of E-7, Warrant Officer, or Commissioned Officer.
  • Must be a graduate of the 18C Special Forces Engineer Sergeant Course. 
  • Expertise in advanced demolitions, target analysis, breaching, calculations for explosives, and target folder development. 
  • Proficiency in instructing field construction, basic wiring, framing, blueprint reading, and building defensive positions. 

Physical Demands and Work Environment:  While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk, listen, and write. The employee frequently is required to use foot/ankle motions, hands or fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is required to stand, walk, sit; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
