Role Summary
We are seeking a contract to hire Payroll Specialist to join our growing team and oversee high-volume payroll operations across multiple entities. This individual will play a critical role in ensuring accurate and timely payroll for approximately 300 employees, while navigating the unique payroll complexities of the construction industry.
Key Responsibilities
Process weekly payroll for ~300 employees across three companies (Utility & Grading, Contracting, and Razorback Boring).
Manage payroll functions specific to construction, including multiple contractors, CDL drivers, laborers, superintendents, and heavy equipment crews.
Handle compliance with wage laws, garnishments, and multi-state payroll requirements.
Support payroll audits, reconciliations, and reporting to leadership.
Coordinate with HR and field supervisors to ensure accuracy of timecards, invoices, and employee records.
Assist with onboarding new employees into payroll systems and maintaining employee data.
Collaborate with the office team to address payroll-related inquiries and resolve discrepancies.
Requirements & Preferences
Minimum 2 years of payroll experience , preferably within the construction industry.
Familiarity with construction payroll complexities (multiple contractors, heavy equipment usage, varying invoices).
Experience with high-volume payroll (200+ employees).
Team-oriented mindset with strong organizational skills to manage large volumes of data.
Software proficiency preferred: QuickBooks, Peachtree, or similar (Sage 100 experience a plus, but not required).
Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and a collaborative approach.

Reports directly to the Office Manager and collaborates with departments across three entities:
Utility & Grading (200 employees)
Contracting Company (40 employees)
Razorback Boring (60 employees)
Current Payroll Specialist will transition out at the end of October, creating an opportunity for a new hire to integrate seamlessly into the team.
Ideal Candidate Profile
Brings at least 2 years of payroll experience, ideally in construction.
Team player who values long-term stability and cultural fit.
Strong attention to detail, with the ability to manage deadlines and competing priorities.
Candidates with frequent job changes or unclear motivations for leaving roles may not be the best fit.
