Role Summary

We are seeking a contract to hire Payroll Specialist to join our growing team and oversee high-volume payroll operations across multiple entities. This individual will play a critical role in ensuring accurate and timely payroll for approximately 300 employees, while navigating the unique payroll complexities of the construction industry.

Key Responsibilities

• Process weekly payroll for ~300 employees across three companies (Utility & Grading, Contracting, and Razorback Boring).

• Manage payroll functions specific to construction, including multiple contractors, CDL drivers, laborers, superintendents, and heavy equipment crews.

• Handle compliance with wage laws, garnishments, and multi-state payroll requirements.

• Support payroll audits, reconciliations, and reporting to leadership.

• Coordinate with HR and field supervisors to ensure accuracy of timecards, invoices, and employee records.

• Assist with onboarding new employees into payroll systems and maintaining employee data.

• Collaborate with the office team to address payroll-related inquiries and resolve discrepancies.

Requirements & Preferences

• Minimum 2 years of payroll experience , preferably within the construction industry.

• Familiarity with construction payroll complexities (multiple contractors, heavy equipment usage, varying invoices).

• Experience with high-volume payroll (200+ employees).

• Team-oriented mindset with strong organizational skills to manage large volumes of data.

• Software proficiency preferred: QuickBooks, Peachtree, or similar (Sage 100 experience a plus, but not required).

• Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and a collaborative approach.

• Reports directly to the Office Manager and collaborates with departments across three entities:

  • Utility & Grading (200 employees)

  • Contracting Company (40 employees)

  • Razorback Boring (60 employees)

• Current Payroll Specialist will transition out at the end of October, creating an opportunity for a new hire to integrate seamlessly into the team.

Ideal Candidate Profile

• Brings at least 2 years of payroll experience, ideally in construction.

• Team player who values long-term stability and cultural fit.

• Strong attention to detail, with the ability to manage deadlines and competing priorities.

• Candidates with frequent job changes or unclear motivations for leaving roles may not be the best fit.
