Description of Work

The position is an Administrative Specialist I located at the Central Prison Healthcare Complex in Raleigh, which houses approximately 1,315 close-custody male offenders.

This position is responsible for providing clerical, administrative, and technical support in the Mental Health administrative area. This individual will serve as the receptionist for all staff located in Mental Health and will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including developing reports and schedules, filing, directing calls to the appropriate person, managing the Mental Health Director's calendar, recording minutes, processing memos and letters, and other related duties. This position requires flexibility in learning new procedures and is periodically called upon to meet deadlines or address critical needs.

Constant use of a computer, copier, fax, scanner, and other office equipment is necessary to generate reports, place orders, and communicate is necessary.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Documented knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office programs

  • Documented experience in creating and developing reports.

  • Documented knowledge of maintaining files in an easily retrievable manner.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of related administrative experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Management Preference 2 years of office assistant/secretarial experience

Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 19,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving the lives and property of its citizens through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as the division of Community Supervision. Other divisions include Administration, Compliance & Accreditation, Comprehensive Health Services, Internal Affairs & Intelligence Operations, Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission, and Rehabilitation & Reentry.

The Division of Comprehensive Health Services is dedicated to providing evidence-based, compassionate, and constitutionally consistent medical care to all offenders in custody. Their goal is to ensure that all offenders receive full-spectrum medical care from the time of entry until their release.

The team of physicians, nurses, behavioral health services, dental services, psychiatric services, pharmacy services, and licensed healthcare administration services work together to provide emergent, acute, routine, and chronic health care, as well as preventive medicine at all prison facilities. They also coordinate with specialists and other clinical consultants outside of prisons throughout the state to ensure comprehensive health and well-being towards a safe transition from prison, improving public health, and decreasing recidivism.
