Senior Recreation Specialist
: Description:
Performs skilled administrative support work planning, organizing, and executing a variety of recreational and community programs and activities in one or more areas including but not limited to Leland Cultural Arts Center (LCAC) Operations, Ceramics/Pottery, Marketing, Programs and Special Events. Additionally, this position assists with the daily operations and services of the LCAC and PRCR department, operating the main office, receiving and responding to inquiries about the department's programs and events, aiding participants, instructors, and staff, and all other related work as apparent and assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Recreation Supervisor.
Essential Job Functions
- Plans, organizes, and executes a variety of recreational and community programs and activities, in areas including but not limited to Community Enrichment, Environmental Education, Cultural Resources, and Health and Wellness.
- Provides coverage for the LCAC as assigned, acting as receptionist; responding to public inquiries, registering participants for programs, and assisting instructors as needed.
- Develops and foster community relationships and partnerships; recruits, trains, and oversees volunteers.
- Assists with public outreach and publicity advocates for the Town; creates and distributes promotional materials.
- Serves as a PRCR representative in the community; promotes PRCR events, activities and programs; encourages the use of the facility.
- Monitors facilities in the absence of management and enforces the rules and guidelines.
- Attends internal operational meetings to stay abreast of Town activities and initiatives; attends external conferences and trainings to stay informed of best practices in program development, delivery, and execution.
- Physically stages PRCR programs in a manner that reduces risks and ensures participant safety.
- Assists with set up and break down of rooms, activities, and programs; ensures cleanliness of the facility by performing basic cleaning services.
- Assists the Recreation Supervisors and Recreation Manager with developing and coordinating gallery programs, programs, special events, facility rentals, and volunteer programs.
- Provides excellent customer service in the execution of Town-sponsored programs, projects, and special events.
- Supports all functional areas of the PRCR department.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
- Associates/Technical degree with coursework in parks, recreation and arts, communications, ceramics, administration, education or related field and considerable experience in parks and recreation, communication, marketing, administration, education, customer service or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including day, night, holiday, and weekend work.
- Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
- Obtain First Aid and CPR certifications within one year of hire.
- Obtain Crowd Management training certification within one year of hire.
Preferred
- Certification as a Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- General knowledge of the principles and practices of parks and recreation, including one or more phases of community recreation activities.
- General knowledge of First Aid methods and necessary safety precautions to be used in recreation work, including:
- Ability to follow, teach, and enforce studio policies and procedures.
- Ability to learn, use, and teach proper safety/hazard protocol in the pottery studio.
- General knowledge of standard office practices, procedures, and equipment.
- Thorough oral and written communication skills.
- Competence in the use of multiple technology platforms, including Microsoft Office and Adobe, ActiveNet, website management systems, and social media platforms, including (Facebook, Instagram, X, and NextDoor, etc.).
- Competence to complete general office tasks, including:
- Handling cash
- Preparing reports, rental quotes, invoices and contracts
- Ability to learn and operate basic AV equipment.
- Must possess or be able to learn basic skills in a pottery studio, including but not limited to fire, load, and unload electric kilns, use potter wheels, and all other commonly used supplies/equipment found in a pottery studio.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work frequently requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel; work regularly requires standing, walking, sitting, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and work occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office with typewriters and/or computer printers, light traffic).
