Summary: Supervises Family Services’ Emergency Shelter for individuals and families fleeing interpersonal violence. The Shelter is open 24/7 and is low barrier. Interpersonal violence covers the following victimization types: domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and/or elder abuse. This position facilitates guest access to the Shelter, offers programming to engage guests in a therapeutic environment, and directs compassionate guest services that will strengthen the well-being and recovery of victims within the Shelter. This position manages essential staff for the operation and upkeep of the shelter. Distinguishing Characteristics: This position is one (1) of two (2) Shelter Coordinators. Work hours are from 6:00 pm - 2:00 am, dependent on Family Services’ needs. The position may include some weekends/holidays as needed. The coordinators supervise a Shelter of between 9 and 16 guest rooms. General Duties
  • Develops a competent, productive, and guest-focused professional Shelter staff through training and ongoing supervision. Recommends hiring, transferring, promoting, demoting, disciplining, and terminating staff. Appraises performance and provides educational and experiential growth opportunities.
  • Provides leadership in addressing and de-escalating conflict between guests, facilitates programming that supports healthy guest interactions, and conducts Shelter Orientations for new guests.
  • Maintains the physical location of the shelter by identifying and monitoring residential tasks assigned to the Resident Advisors and by scheduling regular maintenance/repair services.
  • Supervises and conducts crisis line assessments, guest intakes into the shelter, and problem solves Crisis Line phone issues. Answers Crisis Line as needed.
  • Maintains strong communication with the corresponding Shelter Coordinator colleague, supervisor, and case management staff.
  • Leads and supports the development or enhancement of Shelter procedures to maintain best practices in service provision.
  • Engages ongoing learning through NC Coalition Against Domestic Violence Peer calls and develops peer relationships to support collaborative partnerships with other shelters.
  • Maintains guest data and documentation of services and stays within FSI client database and other platforms that support Shelter functioning. Trains staff on proper electronic and/or paper documentation. Conducts consistent audits to ensure documentation is correct and in compliance with funder requirements. Responds to desk audit requests in a timely manner.
  • Manages volunteer engagement and guest programming as it relates to the needs of the Shelter.
  • Plays an active role in raising the visibility of services offered and connecting the program to the larger community. Provides outreach to partner agencies and tours of the shelter to partners and donors. Leverages relationships to increase the level of community resources (financial, volunteer, tangible, and in-kind) which benefit FSI programs.
  • Provides other support as needed for client services. Performs such other duties as incumbent upon the position and as assigned.
Additional daytime business hours potential functions
  • Schedules Shelter 24/7 coverage and manages gaps with feedback from Housing Services Program Manager or Shelter Coordinator colleague. Develops a rotation schedule for day staff that allows for backup shelter coverage. Provides site coverage when the Resident Advisors cannot cover emergency situations.
  • Coordinates guest services such as weekly guest house meetings.
  • Inputs supply orders and manages financial reporting within Family Services’.
  • Manages petty cash and accounting with Family Services’ Financial Officers.
Additional evening/weekend hours potential functions
  • Manages Shelter coverage changes and accountability. Ensures accurate notation of changes.
  • Supervises inventory checks and reporting.
  • Supervises required safety drills and appropriate documentation of events.
  • Supports supervisor by pulling reports and audits and inputting Shelter guest surveys.
  • Manages evening transportation needs and crisis-related supportive services, such as emergency hotel stays, as needed.
Position Qualifications:
  • Required: Minimum of one (1) year of experience serving interpersonal violence clients or other vulnerable guests in a low-barrier, trauma-informed shelter environment required.
  • Required: Associates Degree. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • One (1) year of experience in a leadership role or supervising front line staff preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide quality guest services and ability to review staff performance preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated crisis intervention skills and domestic violence and sexual assault response.
  • Ability to lead a team, coach, delegate and assign tasks effectively to achieve desired performance and outcomes.
  • Strong listening skills with the ability to provide constructive feedback
  • Maintains dignity and self-control in stressful situations and objectivity about personal strengths and limitations.
  • An understanding and acceptance of regional psychosocial, cultural, religious and economic differences.
  • Articulates ideas clearly (both written and orally) and able to establish personal rapport with people from a variety of backgrounds.
Expected Hours of Work:
  • Primarily Monday to Friday day from 6:00 pm - 2:00 am.
  • Shares after hours and weekend call with other supervisors to provide support to staff as needed.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
  • Maintains physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following: walking, bending, stretching, lifting, standing or sitting for extended periods of time, operating assigned equipment.
  • Ability to work flexible/additional hours as needed.
  • Requires valid NC driver’s license and ability to travel between various agency sites and community resources.
