Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Machine Learning or Deep Learning

The School of Data Science (SDS) at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the broad area of machine learning or deep learning, with an expected start date of Fall 2026 (position # 003234). Hiring is subject to budget availability.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in machine learning or a closely related field, such as Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science, or Information Science, by the start of the appointment. Candidates should demonstrate:

• Strong potential for high-quality scholarly publications
• Promise in securing external research funding
• A commitment to interdisciplinary research and collaboration
• Interest in teaching and curriculum development in Data Science at both undergraduate and graduate levels

We are particularly interested in applicants who apply machine learning to domains such as business, social sciences, healthcare, or sports; address real-world challenges that intersect with organizational, behavioral, or technological systems, and go beyond algorithm development to explore social and community impacts of data-driven solutions.

The School of Data Science

Founded in January 2020, the School of Data Science (SDS) at UNC Charlotte is the first of its kind in the Carolinas and is an interdisciplinary academic unit housed within the College of Computing and Informatics (CCI). SDS currently offers a B.S. in Data Science, a B.S. in Sports Analytics, an M.S. in Data Science and Business Analytics, an M.S. in Health Informatics and Analytics, and a Ph.D. in Data Science. With over 900 students—half of whom are graduate students—and a faculty community of approximately 90 full-time, joint, and affiliate members, SDS is a vibrant hub of innovation in data science research, education, and applied solutions.

The College of Computing and Informatics

The College of Computing and Informatics (CCI) is one of the largest and most comprehensive computing colleges in the nation, with over 140 full-time faculty and staff and more than 5,000 students. Starting Fall 2026, CCI will comprise six academic units, including Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics, Department of Computer Science, School of Human-Centered Computing and Education, Department of Cybersecurity, Department of Machine Learning, and School of Data Science.
