Camp Assistant (SchoolAge Summer Camp)
Location: Durham, NC
Schedule: Seasonal · 25–40 hours/week
Training Required: (Evenings & select weekends)
We are is seeking enthusiastic, patient, and dependable Camp Assistants to support schoolage summer camp programs serving youth ages 5–12, including participants with diverse needs such as ADHD, behavioral challenges, and Autism. Camp Assistants play a key role in creating a safe, inclusive, and fun environment where every child feels supported.
This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who enjoy working with children, thrive in active environments, and are passionate about helping youth grow socially, emotionally, and physically.
Responsibilities for the Camp Assistant:
- Provide active, handson supervision—always staying aware of participant locations and needs.
- Foster a positive, inclusive environment where every child feels welcome.
- Support children with varying behavioral or developmental needs using structure, encouragement, and patience.
- Help reengage children who are reluctant to participate by offering positive encouragement or alternative roles.
Program & Activity Support
- Assist with daily camp activities, games, arts & crafts, and enrichment programming.
- Model appropriate behavior, teamwork, and communication.
- Encourage positive peer interactions and manage small conflicts calmly and consistently.
- Participate in weekly recreational activities.
Behavior & Safety Management
- Set clear rules and expectations at the start of each activity.
- Use positive reinforcement and consistent followthrough to maintain a safe environment.
- Communicate effectively with other staff regarding camper needs, incidents, or concerns.
Required Availability
- Mandatory Training: TBD (evenings + occasional weekends).
- Camp Season: June 2026 – August 2026 for Full Time Hours [Part Time hours will be available for those interested in working throughout the school year]
- Shifts may fall anytime between 7:15 AM – 6:00 PM.
- Must be available up to 40 hours/week if needed.
- Must be comfortable participating in weekly recreational activities.
Minimum Qualifications for the Program Assistants
- Experience working with children ages 5–12 in settings such as camps, afterschool programs, recreation, childcare, or similar environments.
- Ability to support children with special needs using patience, empathy, and consistent structure.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with a team.
- Dependability and commitment to maintaining a safe, fun atmosphere.
- Creativity, especially in areas such as arts, crafts, or youth recreation, is highly valued.
Work Environment
Camp Assistants spend the majority of the day moving, playing, and engaging with children indoors and outdoors. The role requires alertness, physical activity, and willingness to adapt throughout the day.
