Job Description

A Director of Emergency Services opportunity is available in Asheville, NC at an 853-licensed-bed regional tertiary and quaternary care center that serves as the area's only trauma center, comprehensive stroke center, and Level III neonatal intensive care unit, and holds Magnet® designation for nursing excellence.

The role. Reporting into senior hospital leadership, the Director of Emergency Services holds full operational and strategic accountability for the emergency department, encompassing volume forecasting, patient flow coordination, and admission and discharge planning to ensure efficient throughput and high-quality, patient-centered care. The director drives clinical excellence by identifying and implementing evidence-based practices that advance patient safety and quality outcomes, managing variation in clinical practice, and maintaining rigorous regulatory and accreditation compliance. Nursing practice and unit operations fall directly under this leader's direction, including the development of policies, procedures, and nursing standards to ensure patient and family needs are consistently assessed and met. The director partners closely with physicians and the administrative team to enhance existing services and identify opportunities for new service development, while also building and sustaining an engaged, high-performing team through coaching, development planning, and intentional talent management. Budget stewardship is a core expectation, including participation in annual forecasting, ongoing monitoring of departmental financial performance, labor management, and identifying and acting on cost-reduction opportunities.

  • Master's degree preferred
  • 3+ years applicable acute care leadership experience required

  • Must have served as a Director (or equivalent leadership role) in a Level I or Level II trauma center within a large, high-volume emergency department
  • Must demonstrate solid, hands-on knowledge of regulatory standards relevant to emergency services
  • Union experience preferred but not required
