Job Summary
We are seeking a versatile and hands-on Communications, Fiber Optic, OSP & Facilities Engineer to support the ongoing operations and expansion of the MCNC network. This position performs equipment maintenance, installation, and troubleshooting across a wide range of systems, including fiber optics, analog and IP-based communications, and general facilities infrastructure. The engineer will ensure all MCNC facilities operate efficiently, safely, and in alignment with organizational goals.
This role includes electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and facilities maintenance tasks, along with direct field support for fiber deployment projects and network operations. The successful candidate will bring a blend of technical expertise and operational awareness, and will often work independently at job sites, construction zones, or customer locations.

Key Roles and Responsibilities
  1. Conduct random inspections of MCNC-contracted construction crews for quality assurance.
  2. Proactively monitor facilities and systems to identify required maintenance or repairs.
  3. Assist in the selection and management of service vendors and contractors.
  4. Repair or replace failed equipment as necessary.
  5. Monitor and troubleshoot analog audio/video and Video over IP systems.
  6. Train network operations staff on the use of newly deployed systems and equipment.
  7. Assist with the deployment and configuration of new technologies and infrastructure.
  8. Support fiber network and OSP responsibilities, including:
    • Install, maintain, and manage security cameras across MCNC’s campus and network regen sites.
    • Install and administer regen site alarm and battery management systems.
    • Assist with colocation installs, terminations, and related infrastructure work.
  9. Perform minor plumbing tasks such as unclogging drains and repairing leaks; escalate complex issues to vendors as needed.
  10. Perform minor electrical maintenance, including:
    • Replacing light bulbs and ballasts
    • Repairing or replacing lighting fixtures and outlets
    • Troubleshooting circuits, switches, and basic electrical panels
  11. Support and maintain electrical systems and devices, including 3-phase and single-phase equipment.
  12. Maintain and organize tools, vehicles, and maintenance equipment in good working condition.
  13. Operate (or be willing to learn to operate) forklifts and other equipment to assist with loading/unloading as needed.
  14. Maintain facility records, service documentation, and vendor logs.
  15. Participate in on-call rotation and respond to after-hours maintenance emergencies.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
  1. Associate’s degree (AAS) in Electronics, Electrical Engineering Technology, or equivalent experience.
  2. Minimum of 3 years' experience in commercial HVAC systems and general facilities maintenance.
  3. Proven experience with fiber optic and network infrastructure (OSP, IP-based systems, etc.).
  4. Proficient in PC use, including basic HTML and webpage management.
  5. Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS).
  6. Skilled in troubleshooting and servicing 3-phase and single-phase electrical systems.
  7. Basic understanding of NEC and OSHA safety standards for facilities and electrical work.
  8. Ability to read and follow instructions, diagrams, and schematics.
  9. Able to work independently with minimal supervision and problem-solve in the field.
  10. Must be available for on-call support and willing to work outside standard hours as needed.
  11. Must have a valid driver's license and will be required to drive a company vehicle on company business. Pre-employment and annual MVR checks will be required during your employment with the company for this position in order to be approved to drive a company-owned vehicle.
  12. Background and sex offender checks will be performed for pre-employment and annually during your employment with the company.
  13. This role will be required to adhere to the MCNC Substance Abuse policy, which may include drug/alcohol screening at hire and periodically or randomly during employment.
Physical Requirements
  1. Manual dexterity to use hand and power tools for repairs and installations.
  2. Ability to stand, kneel, crouch, climb ladders, and perform physical tasks.
  3. Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs.
  4. Adequate vision (with correction) for reading diagrams and making detailed repairs.
  5. Ability to sit for extended periods to complete computer-based tasks or administrative duties.
Preferred Qualifications/Specialties
  1. Professional certification in Facilities Management or equivalent preferred.
