Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Neuro ICU travel position at a Comprehensive Stroke Center, requiring a minimum of 2 years of Neuro ICU experience and night shift availability.
Details
- Hospital-based Neuro ICU setting at a Comprehensive Stroke Center
- Patient population includes ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes (SAH), SDH, craniotomies, carotid stents, carotid endarterectomies, aneurysm coiling/clipping, seizures, depth electrodes, and myasthenia gravis
- Patient ratios are 2:1, with the possibility of flexing to 3:1 during high census — candidates must be comfortable with this
- Average daily census of 11–12 patients
- Drains used include EVDs, lumbar drains, hemovacs, and Camino (ICP monitoring)
- Specialized equipment includes EVD, Lumbar Drains, Camino, LICOX, NICOM, and Arctic Sun
- EMR: Epic (also uses Pyxis and SBAR)
- 12-hour night shifts, 6:45 PM – 7:15 AM, 3 shifts per week (36 hrs/week)
- Every other weekend required
- No on-call requirement
- Floating required
Requirements
- Active NC or Compact RN license required; license pending at time of submission is acceptable
- Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Minimum 2 years of Neuro ICU experience required — general ICU experience alone is not sufficient
- Strong neuro critical care background is mandatory
- Required skills: mechanical ventilation, IV start, neuro intensive care, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, blood product administration, central line care/management, continuous IV sedation, CVA/acute stroke management, EVD, ICP monitoring, post-neurosurgery management, care of ventilated patients, isolation precautions/PPE, and lumbar drain experience
- Arterial line management experience preferred
- Must pass an EKG test prior to start
- Two professional references from a manager or supervisor within the past 2 years required (pending references at time of submission are acceptable, but must be on file before start)
Additional Information
- Orientation is approximately 24 hours (2 days or 2 nights); weekly orientation schedule
- 8–10 hours of pre-start online modules are required and must be completed prior to the start date and annually thereafter
- First-time travelers will not be considered for this position
- Candidates who have previously worked for Novant Health or New Hanover in any capacity (permanent, PRN, or EP) must wait 12 months before being eligible to apply as a traveler; facility rehire approval is required
- No RTO is permitted during the first week of the assignment due to orientation; RTO requests of 7 days or fewer may be approved provided they do not fall on a holiday
- Candidates must be available to work 2 out of 3 major holidays
- Travel pairs are welcome, provided each candidate has their own transportation and is comfortable with potentially different schedules
- Local candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility are accepted
- Navy blue and white scrubs required
