Description of Work

This position is located at Avery/Mitchell Correctional Institution in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. This is a medium custody male facility.

This position reports to a Correctional Programs Supervisor and is responsible for conducting initial assessments of offender needs and developing case plans, monitoring for compliance and results, and revising as appropriate to meet offender needs and achieve system objectives.

Key duties include:
- Employees carry a caseload of offenders, which involves supportive counseling, conducting assessments, developing case plans, answering and following up on offender questions and problems and making recommendations to the classification committee.
- Assess offender behavior and develop counseling strategies to achieve desired offender progress.
- Employees also assist in major dynamic programs or coordinate major or specialized programs for the rehabilitation of inmates, such as inmate work assignments, work release, education, or recreation, as well as transition planning and coordinating.
- Planning and coordinate transition (re-entry) prior to parole or release into the community for offenders.
- Working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive.
- Provide Supportive Counseling techniques and interviewing skills.
- Developing, implementing, coordinating, and supervising a program withing the framework of Prisons’ policies and procedures.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade Range: $37,377.00 - $65,408.00

If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase May result.

About The Division of Institutions:

The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.
