Description of Work
Recruitment Range: $17.00/hour - $23.00/hour (This is a range. Selected candidate's salary will be determined within this range based on qualifications, equity, and funding at the time of hire.)This is a temporary position and there are no leave or retirement benefits offered with this position. Temporary employees who work an annual average of 30 or more hours per week may be eligible for health insurance coverage under the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). Note: Permanent and time-limited NC State Government employees must separate from their permanent or time-limited position in order to work in a temporary position. All temporaries are limited to one NC State Government temporary assignment at a time.

This position is located at: 12700 Bayleaf Church Rd. Raleigh, NC 27614 Primary Purpose of Position: Looking to share your passion for outdoor adventure in NC State Parks? The Department of Parks and Recreation is looking for an excited applicant to encourage an appreciation of North Carolina's unique natural resources through paddling and hiking adventures. The primary focus is leading the Big Canoe Adventures. Big Canoe programs involve two 14-person canoes, gear, and a trailer. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:- Coordinate the schedule for the Big Canoes by working with state park staff.
- Maintain all equipment for the Big Canoes including boats, paddles, safety gear, truck, and trailer.
- Travel to parks throughout NC to coordinate and lead guided canoe programs.
- Instruct other state park staff on paddling techniques and safety.
- Teach about state parks during special events, school field trips, etc.
- Lead guided hikes, canoe trips, and paddleboard programs in state parks.
- Assist with developing lesson plans and teaching materials for educational programs and volunteer service projects.
- Typical work schedule is Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm
- Must be able to frequently lift up to 50 lbs with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Most be able to work in the outdoors in hot weather conditions.
- Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license within 90 days of employment.
- Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid CPR/First Aid certification within 90 days of employment.
- Must be able to work a rotating schedule that involves working weekends, holidays and after regular work shifts.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:
- Demonstrated experience leading recreation or education programs for schools, youth groups and/or the general public.
- Demonstrated knowledge of public safety with respect to engaging people the outdoors, including knowledge of water safety, and/or sun safety.
- Demonstrated experience with customer service, which may include promptly responding to email, telephone calls, and/or coordinating schedules.
Management Prefers:
Knowledge of natural sciences, ecology and the environment, methods used in the development of interpretive and educational programs and themes.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
