Barista

We're a bakery and Cuban-inspired counter service spot in Charlotte's Optimist Hall dealing in pastries, sammies, coffees, and good times.

We’re looking for awesome people to join our barista team and help all our guests leave with a smile. Our barista team is a human touchpoint, and we spend our days talking with guests and helping them make the best menu selections to make their day better.

A Suárez Bakery & Barra barista sets the tone for the customer experience. We’re looking for someone who can be a guest’s friend and the face of who we are, while embodying our values with a relatable and inviting attitude and thriving in a fast-paced environment.

This position is scheduled for shifts between the hours of 8:30am and 11pm and the base pay is $11/hr plus shared cash and electronic tips averaging an additional $5-6/hr for an average total compensation of $16-17/hr. Full and part-time positions available.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to)

• Welcome guests and engage with a friendly and thoughtful approach
• Be a Suárez expert; sharing menu knowledge and personal testimony
• Help each guest choose the right menu items for them
• Select and package menu items carefully while following proper food-handling procedures
• Prepare hot and cold espresso-based coffee drinks according to standardized recipes
• Ring up guests while keeping the vibe non-transactional
• Clean and organize front of house areas to support the overall operation

• Ability to maintain a proactive, approachable, positive, and engaging demeanor
• Desire to serve as a friend to guests, providing great advice on our items, and ensure customers feel welcome to ask questions
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, high traffic environment
• Ability to navigate difficult or ambiguous situations, always with a positive approach
• Ability to consistently be a team player with a roll-up-your-sleeves attitude
• Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays if needed
• Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance in order to meet the responsibilities of the role
• Ability to stand and/or walk for up to 6-8+ hours a shift in a foodservice environment
• Ability to freely access all areas of the shop, including front of house, kitchen, and storage room by standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, bending and climbing a ladder or step stool
• Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds at any given time; ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
• Proficient with point-of-sale (POS) terminals
• Comfortable working in an environment that is frequently photographed and recorded
• Lives in a commutable distance from Optimist Hall at 1115 N Brevard St, Charlotte, NC 28206

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in a high-volume, customer-facing retail, hospitality, or food-service role
• At least one year of experience in specialty coffee is a plus
• Bilingual is a plus (English/Spanish especially)
