Primary Function
The incumbent maintains lights and power circuits for three phase and single phase, elevators, controls, lighting fixtures, transformers, standby battery power circuits and equipment, making repairs as necessary; tracing and calculating electrical power, perform testing, troubleshooting, installation, and repair of electrical systems, components, emergency generators and Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) switches; installs conduits, wires, cables, pull boxes, and other related equipment required in making additions, extensions, or alterations in electrical systems. Incumbent also makes expert repairs, checks manufacturer’s specifications for proper voltage, amps, on equipment and orders parts as needed.
Job Description
- Electrical: Repairs, installs, replaces, and tests electrical circuits, equipment, and appliances. Inspects and tests electrical lighting, signal communication, power circuits, and equipment.
- Environmental Control: Monitors and records temperatures, oxygen pressure, humidity readings. Adjust functional parts of devices and control instruments and may install specific functional and structural parts.
- Carpentry: Constructs, repairs, and maintains wooden materials such as furniture, equipment, partitions, and other parts of organization’s buildings, using hand and power tools according to written or oral instruction.
- Painting: Applies coats of paint, varnish, stains, enamels, or lacquer to decorate and protect interior and exterior surfaces, trimming fixtures using paint brushes, rollers, and scrapers.
- Plumbing: Inspects, installs, repairs, and replaces pipes, fittings, and plumbing fixtures to maintain the heating, cooling, water, gas, oil, and drainage systems.
- Heating/Cooling: Maintains and repairs air handling systems thermostats/humidistat, sensors, controllers, relay switches, dampers and motors. Chillers for cooling the boilers for heating. Incumbent must be mechanically well versed in pneumatic panels, electrical malfunction, and instrument capabilities.
- Transportation: Drives cars, trucks, and four-wheel drive vehicles to deliver/pick-up passengers, cargo, equipment, etc.
- Inspects vehicles and/or machinery to accurately diagnose and repair issues
- Liaise with clients to determine their automotive requirements and communicate vehicular defects or problem.
- Maintain complete confidentiality of all administrative, medical, and personnel records, and all other pertinent information that comes to his or her attention of knowledge. Civil and criminal penalties for unlawful disclosures or records. Violations of such confidentiality shall be cause for adverse action.
- Assists hospital staff and funeral homes with cadavers.
- Incumbent will be required to work weekend and on call duties.
- May be required to assist with security duties.
- Troubleshooting electrical issues using appropriate testing devices
- Perform circuit breaker corrective maintenance.
- Inspecting transformers, circuit breaker, and other electrical components.
- Incumbent will perform other job related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education/Experience
- A high school diploma/GED
- Two yrs. Technical school or college preferred
- Incumbent must be a Licensed Electrician or minimum of four (4) years’ experience as a Journeyman Electrician
- Minimum of three years, experience in Hospital Maintenance
- Installing and/or maintaining electrical components for Commercial buildings
- Experience with local, state, or federal electrical codes
- Experience with Life Safety Equipment such as Chillers and Emergency Generators
- Must possess a valid NC drivers license
Job Knowledge
- The incumbent will be familiar with safety rules and regulations relating to use/equipment, tools, and tagging electrical panels.
- Familiar with local, state, or federal electrical codes
- Knowledge and skill in calculating power voltage for installation and repair or equipment.
- Knowledge of reading blueprints and specifications and visualize installations.
- Knowledge of electrical and pneumatic control systems, electrical malfunctions, pneumatic controlled instrument capabilities.
- Knowledge of preventive and corrective maintenance procedures with facilities equipment.
- Knowledge and skill to perform a variety of changing duties as required by machinery and equipment repair.
- Ability to drive a variety of cars, trucks, and four-wheel drive vehicles.
- Incumbent must be able to become proficient with most phases of Hospital maintenance within six (6) months.
- Must be able to troubleshoot electrical voltage on components of Commercial and Residential buildings
- Must have knowledge of dual voltage motors
- Knowledge of ARC Flash PPE
Initiative and Ingenuity
The incumbent is under the general supervision of the Maintenance Department Manager. Receives oral or written assignments, accompanied by sketches, drawings or blueprints. Performs all assigned duties in accordance with defined rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Incumbent determines the kind and type of materials needed to complete an assignment, which requires individual initiative and judgment when interpreting a procedure relative to each established policy and objective. Supervisor is available for assistance only on the most complex problems encountered. Supervisor reviews work to insure the finished projects meet instructions and established practices and procedures.
Mental/Visual/Physical
Physical effort is expended in continually standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in small or cramped quarters. Frequently involved in lifting or carrying objects weighing up to and at times beyond 50 pounds. Need visual acuity for reading blue prints and specifications.
Responsibility for Equipment
As an incidental, the incumbent will be required to operate a government-owned or leased motor vehicle in the performance of assigned duties. May be required to repair equipment located in patient homes. Responsible for the following types of equipment hand radio, hand tools, lawn equipment, electrical equipment, plumbing equipment, etc. Responsible for SAFELOC key system of hospital. Responsible for monthly preventive maintenance (PM) on equipment. Misuse or abuse of equipment could affect program budget.
Responsibility for Material
Incumbent will be responsible for selecting types and amounts of materials needed for assigned projects. Responsible for securing materials and supplies. Responsible for the efficient use of materials. Misuse of materials could result in minor incidents which woul reflect poorly in performance evaluation.
Hazards
The incumbent could incur broken bones, scrapes, burns, and infections. Exposure to flying objects, insects, noise hazards, and chemical hazards. May perform work where bad smelling fumes are present.
Responsibility for Others
Incumbent may be required to transport essential staff to facility in inclement weather. Occasional contacts with patients in clinical and home settings. Responsible for safety of hospital employees, patients, and maintenance technicians.
Working Conditions
Work is performed inside and outside in all kinds of weather and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. Incumbent may perform work where bad smelling fumes are present. Incumbent is subject to noise from machinery and electrical shock or burns from equipment, exposure to possibility of scrapes, and infections and has occasional exposure to broken bones. Incumbent is required to know and enforce all safety regulations pertaining to working conditions.
