Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Scope of Position:
The Drafting CAD Technician III is responsible for creating detailed technical drawings, designs, and plans using computer-aided design (CAD) software to support engineering and manufacturing. This role requires advanced CAD skills, knowledge of manufacturing processes, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure designs meet specifications, quality standards, and project deadlines. The Drafting CAD Technician III will also assist in mentoring engineering team members and contribute to process improvements within the Equipment Engineering Team.
Job Requirements:
CAD Design and Drafting:
- Develop and maintain detailed 2D and 3D drawings for parts, assemblies, and equipment using CAD software.
- Create layouts, schematics, and technical documentation to support manufacturing processes while stewarding our Vault system archive for drawing control.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, company protocols, and regulatory requirements.
- Steward the 3D Printing Lab at Winston Salem Cable Plant
Design Collaboration:
- Work closely with engineers, production teams, and project managers to interpret design requirements and specifications.
- Collaborate on design modifications, updates, and troubleshooting to address manufacturing challenges or improve efficiency.
Quality Assurance:
- Conduct thorough reviews of drawings and designs to ensure accuracy, manufacturability, and alignment with project goals.
- Perform tolerance analysis and verify the feasibility of designs for production.
Education/Experience - Required:
- Associate degree or higher in Drafting, Engineering, or a related field plus a minimum of 3 years’ experience in CAD drafting, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Proficiency in CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, or equivalent.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and 3D models.
Education/Experience - Preferred:
- 5 years of experience in CAD drafting, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Certification in CAD software or drafting (e.g., Certified SolidWorks Professional)

The range for this position is $69,026.00 - $94,911.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
