The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for designing and developing mechanical systems and components for industrial equipment. The incumbent will be responsible for the design and development of new machines as well as upgrading and retrofitting existing equipment. This role involves creating innovative solutions, preparing detailed technical drawings, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure designs meet performance, safety, and cost requirements. This position reports directly to the Engineering Manager and requires the candidate to lead design projects from beginning to end.
Essential Duties/Principal Responsibilities:
- Perform mechanical machine design tasks including, but not limited to, sizing and selecting mechanical components, generating bills of materials (BOMs), and ensure the accuracy of maintenance and technical documentation (i.e. manuals).
- Design mechanical systems and products for the baking industry
- Create and refine mechanical designs for new machines and retrofit existing equipment.
- Develop 3D models and detailed drawings using CAD software.
- Collaborate with the design team to create design sketches, layouts, and plans.
- Produce specifications for products and chooses raw materials and components to be used in production.
- Provide technical guidance on manufacturability, machining processes, welding techniques, and assembly procedures.
- Construct models and prototypes to evaluate design performance and functionality.
- Analyze test data and compare results with similar designs.
- Generate Bills of Materials (BOMs) and maintain accurate technical documentation.
- Perform calculations, simulations (FEA/CFD), and prototype evaluations to validate design performance.
- Ensure designs adhere to industry standards, safety regulations, and company quality protocols.
- Performs additional related duties assigned to support project and departmental goals.
Minimum Qualifications: Education, Experience, Skills, License/Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering required; master’s degree preferred.
- Five years of related experience preferred.
- Knowledge of 3D CAD software (Inventor Preferred) and MS Office software.
- Strong understanding of mechanical principles, materials, and manufacturing processes.
- Excellent problem-solving and creative design skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Ability to travel as required (~25%).
- Willingness to collaborate with fellow coworkers to provide the best solution possible.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Experience:
- 2–5 years in mechanical design for industrial machinery or related sectors.
- Familiarity with thermal systems, fluid mechanics, and automation equipment.
