Job Summary

Direct and supervise the operating of one or several types of power construction equipment to excavate, move and/or grade material. Plan and coordinate the efforts of the lead men and craft workers under his/her supervision and motivate them to accomplish the work safely, correctly and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be able to perform all of the principal duties and accountabilities of craft workers under his/her supervision.
  • Work with little supervision, while adding to a safe and positive team environment.
  • Performs directional boring around and/or on utilities for fiber installation projects.
  • Implement all directional drilling plans and procedures according to company plan and oversee all drilling operations of rig site and ensure compliance to all drilling objectives.
  • Follow safety policies and procedures in a safe manner and wear the required personal protective equipment required for the job.
  • Operate HDD Equipment in accordance with company and industry standards.
  • Experience working on right of ways and Method of Traffic (MOT) set-up.
  • Track and communicate daily production and materials. Communicate work progress and safety performance to the site supervision.
  • Install conduit, vaults, cable etc. i.e. doing labor work when not operating equipment.
  • Ensure all utility avoidance procedures are in place, perform pre-walk of drill path to identify potential hazards, and confirm required 811 locating tickets are valid, cleared, and marked adequately.
  • Lead and support all safety related processes and programs as requested. Engage with your work team to ensure we achieve zero injuries. No job is so important that your safety and that of your crew will be compromised.
  • Watch for hazards and report any concerns to your supervisor or safety professional. If needed, use your stop work authority until the issue is resolved.
  • Have an understanding of the scheduling, material control and unit man‐hour performance reporting. Become familiar with the Field Progress Management System (FPMS).
  • Be able to create and execute a one week schedule.
  • Be able to set and execute crew goals based on the project unit rates.
  • Be able to handle logistics and crew assignments.
  • Review crew's timecards for correct hours and phase coding.
  • Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor. Participate in investigation process as needed. Review accidents and the causes with employees.
  • Lead, complete, and sign off on daily pre‐job safety planning in the appropriate format. Identify safety hazards you or other employees may be subject to and take all necessary corrective action to eliminate or mitigate hazards.
  • Assure all crew members understand, participate, and sign all pre‐job safety planning tools at start and end of shift.
  • Understand and respond appropriately to all safety hazards and warning devices (i.e. back‐up alarms, smell of smoke, different colored warning tags, warning sirens).
  • Understand, support, implement, and follow lockout/tag out procedures. Attend site specific training and assure you follow all procedures as out lined in training.
  • Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Use effective verbal and written communication skills. Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers and fractions rapidly and accurately.
  • Listen to other employees and supervisor's suggestions, complaints, problems, safety concerns and recommendations, evaluate each and then devise and implement a plan of action based on that evaluation.
  • Consult with supervisor and if needed HR on any issues.
  • Communicate clearly and collaborate with multiple project stakeholders, interpret stakeholders’ needs, and identify solutions.
  • Provide on‐the‐job training to those individuals under his/her supervision.
  • Train/teach safety practices, policies and procedures related to an employee's assigned tasks.
  • Perform task planning to safely and efficiently carry out all aspects of that work assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a supervisor.
  • Previous experience as an HDD rig operator.

Minimum Qualifications

2 years of experience as a directional drill operator is required. Previous experience working as a heavy equipment operator and a strong working knowledge of the operating and rigging crafts is required. Combination of work experience and/or technical training in an industry-related trade certification or education program. Must have working knowledge of the operating limitations and safe work practices associated with each piece of equipment being operated. A copy of the executed Medical Examiner's Certificate must be on file before any operation begins. Must possess and maintain a clean driver’s abstract and valid full-driver’s license appropriate to the requirements of the vehicle being driven. Class A CDL is required. Must set standards of excellence in leadership, safety, quality and productivity for the members of his/her crew. Must be at least 18 years of age. All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.

Physical Demands

  • Lift and carry heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Stand, Kneel, Bend, Stoop, Move in and around confined and cluttered places, and uneven areas, see and hear naturally or with correction.
  • Full range of motion and flexibility consistent with requirements of the job duties.
  • Requires using hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools or controls according to a set procedure.
  • Requires repetitive movement.
  • Climb and maintain balance on steel framework, stairs, ladders and scaffolds.
  • Work up to a 12 hour shift doing hard physical labor in varying temperature extremes and other outside conditionss


Work Environment

  • Typical construction site environment
  • Requires working in cramped work spaces and getting into awkward positions.
  • Requires working in very hot (above 90 F degrees) or very cold (below 32F degrees) temperatures and exposure to inclement weather such as dust, wind, snow, rain, etc.
  • Requires working in extremely bright or low lighting conditions
  • Includes exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable.
  • Work around hazardous equipment.
  • This position is considered a safety sensitive position.
