Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a fast-paced Cardiac Telemetry unit, requiring a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience and comfort managing high patient acuity and turnover.

Details

  • 13-week minimum contract with extensions up to 26 weeks available, with an option for 36 hours per week
  • Night shift, 3x12-hour shifts (18:45–07:15)
  • Patient ratio of 1:5–6; candidates must be comfortable managing up to 6 patients during surge
  • Primary cardiac and stroke unit serving patients with unstable angina, CHF, dysrhythmias, new CVA/TIA, low-risk chest pain, and stable pre/post care for pacemaker implantation, ICD placement, cardiac catheterization, and uncomplicated peripheral vascular interventions
  • Administers and titrates cardiac drips including Cardizem, Dopamine, and Amiodarone
  • Performs IV starts and manages telemetry monitoring, TR bands, and non-rebreather masks (stable patients only)
  • Unit also houses COVID-positive patients, with use of opti-flow and BiPAP for chronic/stable cases only during surge periods
  • EMR: Epic (Dimensions); medication dispensing via Pyxis; communication via SBAR
  • Float requirement applies to this position
  • On-call required; frequency depends on patient census
  • Every other weekend required, plus 2 Mondays and 2 Fridays in every 6-week period
  • Self-scheduling with leadership oversight; block scheduling is not permitted

Requirements

  • Active NC RN license or compact RN license (license or certs may be pending at time of consideration)
  • Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience in a similar cardiac telemetry or high-acuity setting
  • Proficiency with IV starts, telemetry monitoring, cardiac drips, and pre/post procedure cardiac patient care
  • Experience with PCI patients required
  • Must pass an EKG test prior to start
  • Two manager/supervisor professional references from within the past 2 years required (pending at time of consideration is acceptable, but must be provided before start)

Additional Information

  • Unit orientation is 36 hours; travelers must be available every day during week one for hospital orientation
  • Approximately 8–10 hours of pre-start online modules are required and must be completed prior to the assignment start date
  • The unit has a high weekly patient turnover of 78–90 patients; a nurse with a 6-patient assignment may turn over their entire assignment within a single shift
  • A team lead is available to assist with admissions and discharges
  • Candidates must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
  • Up to 7 days of RTO may be approved, provided it does not fall on a holiday; no RTO is permitted during the first week of orientation
  • Any previous permanent, PRN, or EP employee of Novant Health or New Hanover must wait 12 months before being eligible to work as a traveler
  • Local candidates living within 50 miles of the facility are accepted at a different rate
  • Scrub color requirement: navy blue or white scrubs; Novant t-shirts permitted; jackets must match uniform material and color (no fleece); no ventilated Crocs
  • Travel pairs are welcome; each must have their own transportation and be comfortable with potentially different schedules
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
