Director of Sterile Processing

Lead Sterile Processing Excellence in a High-Volume Surgical Setting

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Director of Sterile Processing to lead and oversee a large-scale sterile processing operation in a busy acute care hospital located in Asheville, North Carolina . Reporting directly to the VP of Perioperative Services , this critical leadership role ensures excellence in sterile processing services across multiple service lines including Endoscopy, OR, CVOR, L&D , and Ambulatory Clinics .

With oversight of 80+ FTEs and 7 Team Leads , the Director will drive strategic initiatives, operational efficiency, and continuous quality improvement, while maintaining the highest standards in infection control, instrumentation sterilization, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership and daily operational oversight for the Sterile Processing Department.

• Collaborate with the VP of Surgical Services to align departmental goals with hospital-wide objectives.

• Supervise and mentor team leads and staff, ensuring professional development, proper staffing, and performance excellence.

• Implement and monitor quality assurance programs for sterilization practices, regulatory compliance, and infection prevention.

• Optimize sterile processing workflow through the use of SPM Workflow and industry best practices.

• Manage department resources, budgeting, and equipment needs efficiently.

• Partner with Perioperative Services and surgical departments to ensure seamless coordination and high-quality patient care.

• Lead initiatives in staff orientation, continuing education, and competency validation.

Qualifications

Required Education & Certification:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Nursing, or completion of a two-year Surgical Technology program.

• Certification required: CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) or CSPDT (Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician) .

• IAHCSMM certification required.

Required Experience:

• Minimum 5 years of progressive leadership experience in Central Sterile Processing within an acute care setting.

• Strong technical knowledge of surgical instrumentation, aseptic techniques, and infection control standards.

• Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.

• Ability to operate in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment with acute attention to detail.

• Proficiency in computer systems and sterile processing technology platforms.
