Job Summary:
The Director of Nursing (DON) ensures the provision of high-quality nursing services to our residents by directing the Nursing Department in accordance with federal and state regulations as well
as the policies and procedures of the facility.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Maintains quality nursing operations by planning, staffing, and ensuring the delivery of quality nursing services according to all federal and state regulations (DFS, OIG, OSHA, DEA, etc.) as well
as the Nurse Practice Act, promoting effective team dynamics, working with the Administrator to ensure that department staff and processes are prepared at all times for surveys; quality assurance processes, standards, and controls are established and monitored, resources needed to deliver established standards and goals for care are available, our policies are implemented in a consistent manner.
2. Ensures availability of adequate, competent nursing staff always by selecting and providing for the orientation of candidates to fill vacant positions, defining job responsibilities, ensuring that
staff receive ongoing supervision and timely annual evaluations, encouraging professional development, preparing work schedules, and scheduling PTO, leave, etc.
3. Fosters high performance in the delivery of care by establishing training goals, directing the planning and coordination of training with the ADON and other organizational resources, assessing effectiveness of training, ensuring staff participation in mandatory in-services, and taking corrective action as needed.
4. Supports the CCRC philosophy of providing services across levels of care by working with other disciplines to coordinate and develop practices and procedures designed to enhance resident
lifestyles.
5. Develops and maintains effective working relationships with residents and their families by direct interaction and telephone contact.
6. Operates department within fiscal constraints by assisting in the budget development, scheduling staff according to budget, establishing procedures for recording the use of billable supplies and medications, monitoring budget variances, and supervising day-to-day operations.
7. Generate new ideas for change and establish us as a site for training and education by developing and maintaining effective working relationships with community agencies, nursing
education programs, other CCRCs, etc.
8. Provides leadership to contributing personal and functional expertise at Management Team meetings, serving on appropriate committees, reporting on clinical outcomes, etc.
9. Ensures 24 hour-a-day/365 day-a-year on-call nursing support to the scheduled staff by establishing and participating in a “Nurse On-Call” schedule.
10. Keeping current on applicable regulations and maintaining professional/technical knowledge by attending conferences and educational workshops, reviewing professional publications,
participating in/leading employee education opportunities, participating in mandatory in-services. Supports & promotes our Shines philosophy and culture.
11. Completes annual compliance and HIPAA training and exhibits behavior as set forth by the Code of Compliance in the performance of their duties.
12. Adheres to our policies and procedures regarding the compliance program of the organization and is timely in reporting any possible concerns.
13. Follows all local, state, and federal regulations as they pertain to their position.
14. Adheres to the policies and procedures covering privacy and security in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
Required Skills/Abilities:
• In-depth knowledge of CCRC procedures and KPI/KQIs of resident care.
• Understanding of basic budgeting and financial reporting.
• Great knowledge of legal regulations and best practices in healthcare.
• Willingness to keep abreast of changing standards in nursing administration.
• Excellent ability to lead and develop team members.
• Great communication and people skills
• Outstanding organizational and stress management skills.
• Aptitude in problem-solving.
Education and Experience:
• Licensed Registered Nurse; B.S.N. or M.S.N. preferred.
• Current Health Care Provider BCLS Certification, obtained through American Heart or Red Cross Program.
• Progressive experience in the nursing profession; five (5) or more years’ experience in long-term care, preferably some or all experience in a CCRC.
• Proven experience as Director of Nursing.
