Summary

Durham Beyond Policing is looking for a visionary leader to direct our work, in partnership with our existing co-director (who leads our organizing strategy and development), in collaboration with our staff, member leadership, and our advisory committee. You must have a demonstrated long-time commitment to our mission, vision, and core points of unity.

As co-director you will lead several critical functions that support Durham Beyond Policing’s continued success as an organization, including development and implementation of strategies for our narrative, fundraising , culture, and evaluation work. This role will lead the charge on implementing practices, systems and tools where they currently don’t exist, and improving all structures wherever possible.

The nature of our organization is to adjust according to the needs of our communities in a given political landscape. Please note that the shape of the work is subject to shift and is done in collaboration with others in leadership in the organization.

Hours/week: 35 hrs/week, mostly 9am-5pm Monday-Friday with regular evening meetings and occasional weekends.

Responsibilities

Fundraising (30%)

  • Develop DBP's grassroots fundraising plan
  • Collaborate with DBP's advisory committee, staff & members on finance and development management
  • Support process for prospecting and applying for non-profit and foundation grant opportunities to reach annual fundraising goals
  • Support co-director on compliance with all existing grant agreements
  • Ensure accurate data collection regarding donor involvement

Communications (30%)

  • Design and implement a clear communications strategy among DBP’s Members, Supporters, and Network through Powerbase, Strive, CRM, Signal, Email, and Social Media
  • Collaborate with members in DBP's Basebuilding and Communication squad to actively engage our base online and offline
  • Represent DBP leaders at community events and media requests along with supporting others
  • Serve as point of contact with independent contractors and interns supporting advertising, printing, translation services
  • Maintain and improve DBP’s website and branding

Supervision and Evaluation (20%)

  • Coordinate meeting schedules, agendas, note taking, and facilitation for DBP’s Advisory Committee
  • Supervision of 1-2 staff team members including periodic coaching on project management
  • Facilitate quarterly staff and program evaluations
  • Ensure the implementation of our work is in compliance with our fiscal sponsor in collaboration with the Co-Director and Program Lead

Work Culture (20%)

  • Coordinate cross squad collaboration amongst Childcare Collective, New Member Orientation, and other squads as needed
  • Assess work culture & outline a plan to tend to gaps
  • Develop systems and infrastructure to support a sustainable work culture rooted in anti-oppression and effectiveness in grassroots organizing
  • Offer a collaborative leadership style with advisory, staff, volunteers and partners - one that centers a lens of liberation, inclusion, and accessibility

As a Member Of The DBP Staff Team You Are Expected To Represent The Organization And Carry Out The Work With Rigor And Care. All Staff Are Expected To

  • Steer the mission of Durham Beyond Policing work in partnership with advisory, staff and members, base and our movement partners
  • Represent Durham Beyond Policing in ways that honor the humanity of those you interact with throughout 1-1 conversations and political meetings
  • Manage all responsibilities in a timely and organized manner to maintain yourself and the organization as respected, trusted partners with community members
  • Care for yourself in ways that allow you to sustain consistency, encouragement, and inspiration, and as a model for your team
  • Embrace the opportunity to give and receive constructive, grounded feedback
  • Create and support meeting schedules, agendas, note-taking, and facilitation for DBP Staff and general body meetings as needed

Required

Skills and abilities

Bring your professional and proven experience, your acumen for libratory management (recognizing supervision as a tool to cultivate movement leadership), and your demonstrated ability to lead a rapidly evolving organization.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects, plot benchmarks, and multitask with minimal supervision
  • Ability to meet deadlines and motivate self and team
  • Fluency in organizational development, including creating a healthy work culture
  • Experience in developing & implementing narrative strategy
  • At least 2 years of experience in nonprofit finance, development and fundraising, or related field
  • Successful management of an organizational budget over $500K
  • Experience working with a fiscal sponsor
  • Political clarity, confidence and commitment to principled struggle while collaborating with team members, in coalitional settings, with elected leaders, with funders, during interviews, speeches and debates, in tense settings and across challenging power dynamics
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and commitment to building authentic relationships
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience in meeting/workshop facilitation
  • Experience in supervising organizers
  • Availability to work flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends in Durham

Preferred

  • Bilingual (English and Spanish)
  • Experience in and commitment to transformative justice, conflict transformation, and community accountability
  • Experience working with youth and/or those directly impacted by policing-incarceration system

Supervision

  • Reports to DBP Advisory Committee
  • Works in close partnership with the Co-Director
  • Accountable to Executive Director of Southern Vision Alliance, DBP’s fiscal sponsor
  • Accountable to your DBP Co-Director, staff, and members
  • Supervises, manages, and supports the staff to be successful, and helps coordinate and support DBP members

Interview process: Position open until filled, applications accepted on a rolling basis. Applicants invited to interview will go through 3 rounds of interviews with each being about 1 hour each. The final round will include time for a demonstration of competencies needed for the role. We would like to make an offer by September.
