Gaston College promotes lifelong learning and economic development through 140 programs of study and is looking for a dynamic Procurement Director. The Procurement Director will be a visionary leader who can navigate complex regulatory landscapes while championing the college's standards of excellence. The Procurement Director will lead a team of three staff members who are responsible for managing the procurement of goods and services, overseeing auxiliary services such as shipping, receiving, and mail services while ensuring that all processes are compliant with state guidelines, including those set by the North Carolina Purchase and Contract and the North Carolina Department of Information Technology.
The Procurement Director plays a critical role in shaping and executing the procurement strategies that support the institution's mission and goals. This position involves overseeing the sourcing of equipment, goods, and services at competitive prices while ensuring quality standards are maintained. The Procurement Director is also responsible for developing and maintaining strong vendor relationships, negotiating contracts, and ensuring that all procurement processes are efficient and aligned with the college's objectives.
The Procurement Director is also responsible for implementing procurement strategies that reduce costs, improve efficiency, and align with the overall objectives of Gaston College. This includes establishing and maintaining policies and procedures for purchasing and supplier management and staying informed about market trends and new product developments.
The Procurement Director is a key leadership position within Gaston College that reports directly to the Vice President for Finance and collaborates closely with various departments across the institution. This role involves supervising and mentoring direct reports, fostering a collaborative work environment, and providing guidance and support to ensure the team meets its goals. The Director also works closely with department heads to understand their procurement needs and ensures that the necessary items are sourced in a timely and cost-effective manner. This position requires a high level of professionalism, confidentiality, and accountability, as well as a commitment to representing Gaston College with integrity and excellence.
Priorities
- Cultivate a deep understanding of Gaston College's procurement processes and build strong relationships with staff to effectively address their purchasing needs and challenges.
- Master and implement North Carolina's purchasing regulations, ensuring all procurement activities are fully compliant with state and local rules.
- Foster a collaborative environment by training and mentoring staff to enhance their knowledge of compliance requirements and improve procurement practices across the college.
- Drive value optimization for the college's expenditures, with a particular focus on actively contributing to the ongoing Capital Program and identifying strategic opportunities for cost savings and efficiency improvements.

This individual will have a deep understanding of federal, state, and local purchasing guidelines, ensuring compliance and efficiency in all procurement activities. The ideal candidate will be curious and open-minded, with a strong ability to apply complex regulations in practical and understandable ways across the college.
Possessing excellent verbal and written communication skills, the Procurement Director will be detail-oriented and analytical, with a keen eye for accuracy and a commitment to data-driven decision-making. Strong interpersonal skills are essential for building and maintaining positive relationships with vendors and internal stakeholders. The successful candidate will be adept at managing multiple projects simultaneously, fostering a collaborative work environment, and driving continuous improvement in procurement practices.
The Procurement Director will serve as a key advisor on procurement best practices and will proactively address challenges and opportunities to enhance the college's procurement function. This role requires a blend of strategic thinking and hands-on management, with a focus on optimizing value and achieving both immediate and long-term goals for Gaston College.
Qualifications
Minimum requirements include an associate's degree from a nationally accredited institution, along with a minimum of five years' experience in purchasing or a similar role and a demonstrated strong understanding and background in procurement activities as well as solid knowledge of sourcing and experience in negotiating contracts and pricing. Additionally, at least two years of supervisory experience is required.
Preferred qualifications include a bachelor's degree in business, accounting, or a related field. A North Carolina Purchasing Certification and/or CSCP (Certified Supply Chain Professional), CPSM (Certified Professional in Supply Management) certifications are preferred. Experience with Ellucian Colleague (ERP System) and North Carolina purchasing practices is highly desirable. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, along with proficiency in financial analysis, procurement software, and the MS Office Suite, are also preferred.

Gaston College was granted a charter by the State of North Carolina in 1963 and began its first classes in temporary headquarters in September 1964. The college moved to its permanent campus on Highway 321 between Dallas and Gastonia two months later. Serving both Gaston and Lincoln counties, Gaston College enrolls over 5,000 students each term in curriculum programs and averages over 16,000 students annually in its continuing education programs. Part of the North Carolina Community College System, Gaston College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate degrees.
The twelve major buildings that comprise the Gaston College Dallas campus contain approximately 450,868 square feet and have an estimated current value of $41,385,862. There is an efficient road system and parking for more than 2,000 cars. College facilities (including a 480-seat auditorium) are available for public use and may be scheduled through the Office for Finance and Facilities. Gaston College is a commuter institution and does not have dormitories or housing for rent.
