Position: Mammography Technologist – Durham VAMC

Position Summary

The Durham VA Medical Center is seeking a skilled and compassionate Mammography Technologist to provide high-quality breast imaging services in support of the early detection and diagnosis of breast disease for our Veteran population. The Mammography Technologist performs screening and diagnostic mammography procedures while ensuring patient safety, comfort, privacy, and image quality. This role may include day, night, and weekend coverage based on departmental needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform screening and diagnostic mammography exams in accordance with physician orders, MQSA standards, and departmental protocols
• Verify patient identity, clinical history, and exam appropriateness prior to imaging
• Position patients accurately to obtain optimal images while ensuring patient comfort and dignity
• Operate mammography equipment and associated imaging systems to produce high-quality diagnostic images
• Ensure compliance with Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) and radiation safety principles
• Educate patients on procedures and respond to questions and concerns with professionalism and empathy
• Administer contrast agents for breast procedures when applicable and within scope of practice
• Accurately document procedures and patient information in the electronic medical record (EMR)
• Assist radiologists during interventional breast procedures as needed
• Participate in quality assurance activities, equipment maintenance checks, and performance improvement initiatives
• Comply with VA policies, Joint Commission standards, and federal regulations
• Provide coverage for day, night, weekend, and holiday shifts as required

Required Qualifications

• ARRT Certification in Mammography – required
• Graduate of an accredited radiologic technology program
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Current MQSA-required continuing education and clinical experience
• Thorough knowledge of breast anatomy, positioning techniques, and radiation safety
• Strong communication skills and commitment to patient-centered care

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience in a hospital, imaging center, or women’s health setting
• Experience working with Veterans or within a federal healthcare system
• Familiarity with VA electronic health record systems (CPRS/VistA preferred)

Physical & Work Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
• Ability to lift, move, and position patients with or without reasonable accommodation
• Fine motor skills and manual dexterity for precise patient positioning
• Work in a clinical environment with exposure to low-level ionizing radiation
