Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit Morehead Planetarium and Science Center is a national leader in informal science education, utilizing the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's resources to educate the public and promote a better understanding of science. Since its founding in 1949 as the first planetarium on a college campus and the first in the South, millions of North Carolinian students, teachers, and families as well as visitors from around the world have benefitted from Morehead's science programs. In the 1960s and 1970s, Morehead played a significant role in expanding humankind's exploration of the cosmos by training 62 NASA astronauts in celestial navigation, including 11 of the 12 who walked on the Moon. Today, Morehead is inspiring the next generation of scientific explorers through top-notch educational and public programming, including fulldome planetarium shows, interactive exhibits, hands-on classes, summer camps, and statewide outreach like the annual North Carolina Science Festival. Position Summary This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station. The Interpretive Lead Coordinator will coordinate, staff, train, and support interpretive programs offered for visitors to the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center particularly in the areas of the Science Stage, Makerspace (Launch Lab), exhibit floor and other areas as Morehead visitor programming grows. This includes management of staff, facilitation of, and evaluating programs for the Science Stage, Launch Lab and Rovers Cart programs, projecting staffing needs and continued programmatic development, research, and planning. Curriculum development and program planning for these areas will be a significant portion of the position duties. The position will supervise student and temporary employees and support the School + Interpretive Program Manager with scheduling and training of student staff. This position will assume a lead role in the supervision of weekend educational programming, will be the on-site supervisor for staff engaged in interpretive programs during those hours, and provide support to other areas of operation as needed. The person in this position will need to be able to handle emergencies, reassign staff to other duties for coverage and make decisions quickly to ensure smooth educational program operation in all spaces. The position will have lead responsibility for the management and maintenance of the Science Stage, Launch Lab, and museum floor programs area as well as equipment used in those spaces including laser cutters, CNC routers, 3D printers and hand equipment. The position will be responsible for writing, planning, and scheduling new programs for each of the listed spaces. This will include working with other Programs staff to construct activities and curriculum, test the activities with appropriate audiences and assist with design of program graphics and educational support materials. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment and one year of experience that demonstrates possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience A valid North Carolina Drivers License or the ability to obtain one. Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Experience with maker/tinkering education and/or interpretive programming primarily in a museum setting preferred. National Association of Interpretation Certification. Required Licenses/Certifications Special Physical/Mental Requirements Ability to travel across the state for approximately 2 to 3 weeks each month from August through May. Travel may be local or overnight. Ability to drive a cargo van. Ability to move/maneuver 100 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
