Controls Engineer
An energy technology company is hiring a Controls Engineer to lead structural analysis and new nuclear plant projects. This role requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Computer Science and 15+ years of experience to lead the design, architecture, and validation of complex nuclear control systems utilizing DCS hardware, and rigorous Safety Instrumented System (SIS) lifecycles. This is a 12 months contract. location: Wilmington, North Carolina

education: Bachelors responsibilities:
- Designs and validates control and monitoring systems for power plant fluidic, mechanical, and electric systems.
- Develops DCS hardware configurations and software using tools like ToolBoxST, ControlST, and VMWare.
- Authors high-level technical documentation including System Design Descriptions (SDD), I/O Lists, and Logic Diagrams.
- Manages the full Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) for safety-instrumented systems (SIS) in regulated industries.
- Interfaces with third-party equipment using protocols such as OPC, Modbus, Profibus, and IEC.
- Leads verification and validation (V&V) activities, including the creation of test plans, procedures, and reports.
- Coordinates scope, labor budgets, and schedules with Technical Project Engineers and Project Managers.
- Implements Agile, LEAN, or FastWorks methodologies to drive productivity and continuous improvement.
- Acts as a subject matter expert on Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS), firmware, and cybersecurity scanners.
- Conducts technical assessments, optioneering, and trade-off studies for complex digital architectures.
- Ensures all designs meet strict regulatory guidance and safety standards for nuclear or life-safety applications.

- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Nuclear, Computer Science or Technology, Engineering, or equivalent technical degree with 15+ years industry related controls experience.
- 7 year experience with architecture, design, software programming, and implementation of DI&C, protection, and monitoring systems in nuclear power plant, fuel manufacturing, or test facilities.
- 5 year experience with architecting, developing or preparing or writing, implementing, and using detailed and structured plans, procedures, work instructions, guides, templates, checklists, etc. for digital systems hardware and software development lifecycle for computer based safety instrumented systems (SIS) in the nuclear, power, process, marine, medical, pharmaceutical, aerospace, military, national energy laboratory, or related life safety related industries.
- 5 year experience with diverse digital computer based systems hardware and software technology stacks such as
- 5 year experience using Microsoft Office including Visio at an expert level.
- 5 year experience with technical writing with focus on plans, procedure, and guides as well as requirements and design specifications.
