Cytologist III

Overview: The Cytologist III performs specialized tasks involved in screening slides of clinical specimens to detect evidence of cancer or other pathological conditions. Requires a thorough knowledge of the morphology of normal cells and cellular changes associated with physiological states, reactive processes, inflammatory changes and changes resulting from effects of specific forms of treatment such as irradiation and chemotherapy. Evaluates the quality of specimen preparation utilizing knowledge of the expanding variety of methods of preparation and staining in the laboratory. Takes a lead role in the development and implementation of new procedures, instrumentation, and computer functionality. Assumes responsibility for projects and/or functions. Serves as a resource in area of responsibility. Performs testing that requires specialized knowledge within a discipline and/or crosses disciplines. Trains new employees in the theoretical and operational aspects of procedures and evaluates their work. Assists supervisor/manager in review of laboratory reports, procedures, quality control. Serves as a technical resource and mentor to the staff. Assists with the technical and compliance requirements for regulatory agencies. Organizes and maintains updated technical resources for the department. oversees departmental proficiency testing. Assumes major responsibility for updating, reviewing departmental procedure manuals. Assists in the annual evaluation of the technical performance of employees. Department Description:
