Project Engineer
Pay: $115k/yr+ based on experience Company Overview

The Project Utilities Engineer is responsible for the planning, design, and supervision of capital and in-house water and wastewater projects, while also providing technical and regulatory support to operations. This role plays a key part in driving utility infrastructure development, regulatory compliance, and construction oversight. Location & Travel
- Primary Location: Charlotte, NC (office-based)
- Travel: Required 2–3 days per week; typically within driving distance (2–3 hours), mostly day trips
- Design engineering plans for water distribution, wastewater collection, and treatment systems
- Evaluate project proposals and provide PE stamp/seal when required
- Exercise professional engineering judgment for materials selection and process design
- Engage with regulatory agencies and technical partners
- Prepare engineering specifications, cost estimates, and design packages
- Provide oversight for mid-sized and large utility projects
- Coordinate with internal and external project teams to ensure successful project delivery
- Inspect construction work to ensure adherence to design and safety requirements
- May serve as project manager or construction superintendent on an as-needed basis
- Oversee change orders and adjust project plans as needed
- Conduct hydraulic modeling and analysis of water systems
- Provide field support for operations and troubleshooting
- Assist with capital planning and long-term infrastructure improvements
- Other duties as assigned
- 3+ years of project management experience
- 3–5+ years of professional engineering experience, preferably in water/wastewater utilities
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Mechanical, or Environmental Engineering
- P.E. License (required)
- Valid driver’s license
- Experience in municipal water/sewer utility operations
- Strong project management and budgeting skills
- Understanding of construction methods, codes, and safety practices
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and AutoCAD
- Familiarity with SCADA, GIS, and asset management systems (preferred)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage contractors and consultant engineering teams
- Strong analytical, detail-oriented, and self-directed approach
