Position summary
The Administrative Director for Cardiac Monitoring provides strategic leadership and systemwide oversight for all aspects of cardiac and physiologic monitoring across DUHS. This role directs the development, implementation, and evaluation of monitoring standards, clinical practices, and technology infrastructure in partnership with operational leaders, Clinical Engineering, DHTS, Cardiology, and enterprise‑level committees. Serving as the primary liaison to monitoring vendors and the subject matter expert for clinical monitoring practices, the Director oversees technology lifecycle management, performance improvement initiatives, alarm safety, regulatory alignment, staff competency, and policy governance. Through data‑driven decision‑making, cross‑disciplinary collaboration, and coordinated change management, the Director ensures high‑quality, reliable, and safe monitoring systems that support optimal patient outcomes across the health system.
Hours: Monday-Friday with other hours as needed to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
Specific Job Responsibilities and Standards: 1. Program Leadership & Strategic Direction
- Provide strategic oversight and direction for the DUHS Cardiac Monitoring Program in partnership with ACNO for Heart Services.
- Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of systemwide cardiac/physiologic monitoring standards, practices, and initiatives.
- Co‑chair the DUHS Monitoring Oversight Committee and DUHS Cardiac Monitoring Committee, ensuring agendas, membership, and SharePoint resources remain current.
- Partner with Cardiology Medical Directors on pilot programs, clinical practice changes, evidence reviews, and policy approvals.
- Serve as the primary point of contact and subject matter expert for cardiac monitoring inquiries, including practice changes, profile revisions, and clinical investigations.
- Serve as the liaison to Philips and other monitoring vendors.
- Manage all aspects of vendor engagement including weekly project meetings, on‑site visits, configuration reviews, and evaluation of internal programming changes (telemetry, pulse oximetry, capnography, ventilator integration).
- Oversee vendor recalls, assess operational impacts, and coordinate mitigation strategies with CE and DHTS.
- Lead DUHS participation in any cardiac monitoring–related RFP processes in partnership with Clinical Engineering (CE) and DHTS.
- Review and troubleshoot vendor reports, monitor data pull issues, definitions, delays, and errors.
- Coordinate quotes, timelines, support needs, and system impacts for new or additional monitoring equipment.
- Plan and coordinate software or equipment upgrades, new technology implementations, and unit moves in partnership with CE, DHTS, and operational leaders.
- Approve and/or perform user acceptance testing (UAT) for all new workflows, upgrades, and equipment deployments.
- Develop and maintain systemwide schedules and sequencing for upgrades, changes, and new installations.
- Conduct site visits with CE and DHTS to assess alarm response challenges tied to geography, equipment, workflows, and alarm fatigue.
- Oversee DUHS paging lists and related processes.
- Review, analyze, and report on cardiac monitoring performance metrics including safety events, alarm data, and audit findings.
- Conduct serious safety event (SSE)–related investigations and report findings to appropriate leaders and committees.
- Implement data‑driven quality improvement initiatives addressing alarm response, alarm fatigue, monitoring parameters, and workflow optimization.
- Collect and analyze pre‑ and post‑intervention data for pilot projects (e.g., parameter changes, phone algorithms).
- Produce monthly alarm reports by unit, CSU, and facility, recommending practice changes as needed.
- Present relevant trends, risks, and recommendations to DUHS Monitoring Oversight and DUHS Cardiac Monitoring Committees.
- Provide systemwide oversight for cardiac/physiologic monitoring education and staff competency.
- Collaborate with CNE, Education Supervisors, CNS, and operational leaders to ensure appropriate training, including JIT education and annual revalidation.
- Oversee the development, review, and updating of DUHS cardiac/physiologic monitoring educational modules, incorporating evidence‑based practice.
- Lead the DUHS Cardiac Monitoring Champion Program and ensure completion and review of clinical audits.
- Provide clinical support and consultation for monitoring‑related practice changes and staff questions.
- Maintain ownership of policies and procedures related to cardiac monitoring, including secondary notification processes.
- Ensure systemwide adherence to monitoring standards and regulatory expectations.
- Partner with relevant clinical practice committees on revisions, approvals, and dissemination of monitoring‑related policies.
- Requires Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
- Strongly preferred graduate degree in Nursing.
- Healthcare Administration, or Business Administration advanced degree may be considered.
- Current unrestricted RN license issued by or recognized by the North Carolina BON.
- Requires a minimum of nine years progressively responsible experience in hospital leadership or advanced clinical practice.
- Experience with vendor relations, cardiac monitoring systems, nursing education, policy, or process/quality improvement strongly preferred .
