Role Overview
Thomas & Hutton is seeking an experienced Landscape Architect Project Manager to join its Durham, North Carolina team. This leadership role is ideal for a seasoned landscape architecture professional with a passion for innovative, sustainable design and a strong background managing complex projects from concept through completion.
The Project Manager will oversee a diverse portfolio of projects, collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, and mentor junior staff—while maintaining the highest standards of design excellence, client service, and project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Project Leadership & ManagementLead and mentor a team of landscape architects through all phases of project delivery.
Manage projects from conception through construction, ensuring schedules, budgets, and quality standards are met.
Oversee project scopes, timelines, and financial performance.
Continuously improve project workflows, tools, and delivery processes.
Collaborate with clients, consultants, and internal engineering teams to develop and implement high-quality design solutions.
Ensure compliance with industry standards, sustainability goals, and local regulations.
Apply sustainable design principles and best practices across project types.
Build and maintain strong client relationships through proactive communication and engagement.
Support business development efforts including proposal preparation, interviews, presentations, and fee negotiations.
Represent the firm through networking and client-facing activities.
Guide and support the professional growth of junior landscape architects.
Develop and implement strategies to enhance team performance, collaboration, and career development.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture.
Professional licensure or registration (RLA/PLA).
8–10+ years of experience in landscape architecture design and project management.
Experience across diverse project types (parks, commercial, master-planned communities, etc.).
Strong background in site planning and the entitlement process.
Proven experience managing project budgets, schedules, and cost estimates.
Knowledge of sustainable design principles and practices.
Familiarity with local regulations, permitting, and approval processes.
Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and motivate teams.
Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently while collaborating in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
