Duties
Essential Functions/Duties The following job functions are typical for a position of this nature. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each function satisfactorily. Other job functions and duties may be required as assigned. Percentages for each function are approximate and may vary.- Receive, document, barcode, and store incoming evidence and property
- Maintain accurate computer records and scan documentation into case reports
- Review and correct officer-submitted information; follow up as needed
- Safely package, store, and dispose of items such as narcotics, firearms, biological evidence, and hazardous materials in accordance with legal and safety protocols
- Handled large quantities of marijuana and other controlled substances with attention to mold/pathogen risks
- Coordinate release or destruction of property per court orders and applicable laws
- Conduct legal checks using AOC and DCI systems; verify ownership and eligibility (e.g., firearm releases)
- Prepare return letters and coordinate with owners, law enforcement, and other agencies
- Release vehicles and ship recovered property
- Maintain detailed chain-of-custody documentation
- Testify in court regarding handling and integrity of evidence
- Coordinate evidence viewings with attorneys and investigators
- Serve as department liaison for ATF, DEA, FBI, HSI, and SS evidence
- Enter ATF firearm trace information and share results with appropriate personnel
- Maintain records for all Sexual Assault Kits and ensure DOJ compliance
- Prepare manifests for items to be destroyed, sold, donated, or auctioned
- Coordinate and publicize unclaimed property auctions
- Monitor and restock evidence-related supplies
- Assist officers and the public in retrieving evidence and property
- Provide briefings on evidence handling to new personnel
- Support development of improved evidence procedures and systems
- Knowledge of evidence handling procedures, including chain of custody, records management, and law enforcement protocols
- Understanding of federal, state, and local laws related to evidence collection, storage, and disposition
- Familiarity with courtroom procedures and providing testimony
- Knowledge of safety regulations for hazardous and biohazardous materials
- Proficiency in maintaining a secure warehouse or storage environment
- Proficiency with modern office practices, computer systems, and standard office equipment
- Ability to accurately use and interpret information from systems such as AOC, NCIC, DOJ, DA filing, DCI, and Probation
- Skilled in using office software and technology, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, scanners, and copiers
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to plan, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, professionalism, and discretion
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality of sensitive materials
- Ability to train others in evidence handling, safety procedures, and related protocols
Requirements
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Novice to Intermediate level of familiarly with police evidence proceeded procedures
- Or any combination of education and experience
- Valid driver’s license
- Must be 20 years or older
- DCI Module II certification within 12 months of employment
- IAPE certification within 12 months of employment
