Legal Operations & Compliance Manager


Position purpose:

Support the JT International U.S.A., Inc. (JTI US) Legal Director to ensure that the JTI US legal team and the global Legal & Regulatory Affairs (LRA) team fully contribute to the achievement of JTI's business objectives. Support all business functions by providing high-quality legal advice regarding the US market to find the most optimal way to execute JTI's strategies in the US and the Americas region and achieve sustainable business growth. Manage company litigation with a focus on products liability litigation.

What will you do – responsibilities:

  • Litigation: Assist in managing a large volume of litigation through external counsel, with a focus on products liability litigation. Together with paralegals, support external counsel in all aspects of litigation, including discovery, motions, pleadings and strategy. Additionally manage internal reporting and financial reporting requirments related to litigation. Manage costs of external counsel within the framework of the annual JTI US legal budget;
  • Regulatory Law: Provide advice on US law related to tobacco and vaping, including rules and regulations from state and federal agencies such as the FDA, FTC and TTB. Assist in managing the US market's compliance with applicable legislation and agreements such as the Tobacco Control Act, the PACT Act and the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement. Anticipate, monitor and analyze legislation, assessing its impact on JTI. Support the legal teams and global tax teams in the filing of necessary licenses, registrations, reporting, certifications and payments;
  • Compliance: Proactively identify legal and reputational risks and collaborate with stakeholders to develop and implement mitigation measures. Support LRA's Compliance team and provide US entities with advice on compliance issues, including competition law, sanctions, anti-bribery, anti-harassment, cybersecurity and data protection. Assist in responding to governmental audits, inspections or interactions with regulatory authorities. Manage the approval process on marketing materials for JTI's products. Prepare and conduct compliance training;
  • Contracts: Manage, advise on and negotiate contracts, intercompany agreements and terms & conditions for JTI entities. Develop contract templates and samples, and maintain JTI's contract management tool. Draft and review contracts, policies, procedures and other legal documents;
  • Business Mindset: Bring value and speed to commercial decision-making with sophisticated legal advice and strategic recommendations on all areas of the business. Build and maintain strong working relationships with JTI colleagues. Work closely with JTI's legal teams in the Americas, Geneva HQ and LRA's Business Service Center to provide legal advice that helps JTI and the US market operate in a manner that delivers on its annual and strategic business goals.


Who are we looking for – requirements:

  • Law degree and qualification to practice law;
  • 5+ years of practice in a law firm or in-house;
  • Fluency in English with excellent written and oral communication skills; experience in litigation; experience in product liability litigation a plus.
