Introduction

The land that became Alapocas Run State Park was donated to the city of Wilmington in the early 1900s by local industrialist William Bancroft. Alapocas Run became a state park in 2002.

Summary Statement

Works as a member of the Wilmington State Parks management team under the Park Superintendent to manage all administrative, operational and maintenance functions at Alapocas Run and Wilmington State Parks, including oversight of state park office operation and revenue collection, visitor services, facility rentals, related events and programs. Develops and implements the management plan for the Blue Ball Barn special use facility including housed collections. Responsible for staff recruitment, supervision and development. Develops and administers the park operations budget, assesses park needs, manages contracts and develops mid to long range plans.

Essential Functions

  • Interprets and applies park rules and regulations and works with Department law enforcement to ensure safety and security of park visitors.
  • Oversees revenue collection, recording and deposit. Prepares grant requests and manages budget for special facilities.
  • Plans and coordinates maintenance, visitor programs and services and fiscal administration to ensure all areas and facilities are functioning according to established standards.
  • Develops and conducts interpretive/environmental education programs and recreational events.
  • Assists park visitors and the public by providing information, first aid/emergency care and attention to concerns that may occur within or proximate to the park boundaries.
  • Assigns projects, reviews progress and coordinates staff activities to ensure visitor safety and satisfaction and accomplishment of park objectives.
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with adjacent landowners, park volunteers, contractors, vendors, community groups, and park benefactors.
  • Ensures public safety through regular inspection of park facilities and grounds and review of park law enforcement activity.
  • Maintains and compiles fiscal and narrative records and reports.
  • May schedule, assign and review the work of full time and seasonal park staff.
  • Uses automated information systems and computer software to research, review, analyze, document, and report on relevant park information.   
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Job Requirements

JOB REQUIREMENTS For Park Superintendent I

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  • Six months' experience working in natural resources, parks, historic sites or recreation.
  • Knowledge of managing diverse activities in support of operational, project or program services.
  • Knowledge of planning, developing, and implementing educational or recreational programs or special events.
  • Knowledge of staff supervision acquired through course work, academic training, training provided through an employer, or performing as a lead worker overseeing the work of others; OR supervising staff which may include planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others; OR supervising through subordinate supervisors a group of professional, technical, and clerical employees.

All new hires are required to report to the Statewide New Employee Orientation (SNEO) on their first day of employment. Sessions are held at designated locations in Kent or New Castle County.
