Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Neonatal ICU position at a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and teaching hospital, requiring at least 2 years of Level 3 and/or Level 4 NICU experience with 12-hour night shifts.
Details
- 53-bed NICU with an average census of 58, located within a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and teaching hospital
- High-acuity neonatal patient population including respiratory (RDS, TTN, MAS, BPD), cardiac (TOF, VSD, HLHS, PDA, PPHN), neurological (seizures, IVH, HIE), and complex GI/GU/metabolic/infectious diagnoses
- Patient ratios vary by acuity: 1:1, 1:2, or 1:3
- Shift: 12-hour nights, 1900–0700 (36 hours/week)
- Weekend rotation requires 2 Fridays and 2 Mondays, plus every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday) within each 6-week scheduling cycle
- No on-call requirements for travelers; if the NICU cannot utilize a traveler, they may be floated to similar units
- Floating to Neonatal PCU or General Peds (as a helping hand to Pediatric CVICU, PICU, or General Peds) based on staffing needs; travelers with prior experience in these areas may be assigned more actively
- EMR: Epic (experience required)
- IV Pumps: Alaris and Medfusion syringe pumps; Medication Dispensing: Omnicell; Monitoring: Philips; Therapeutic Cooling: Tecotherm; Breast Milk Scanning: MOMs system
Requirements
- Active NC or Compact RN license required
- Current certifications: BLS and NRP
- Minimum 2 years of Level 3 and/or Level 4 NICU experience required, with most recent experience within the last year
- Must be comfortable in a high-acuity, fast-paced NICU environment
- Epic EMR experience required
- Skills required include: vasoactive drip titration, invasive line management (arterial lines, CVP), ventilator and trach management, chest tube management, CRRT experience, ECMO (baby side) experience, EVD and Camino device (ICP/temp monitoring) experience, sedation and analgesic drip management, aseptic and sterile technique, foley insertion and management, g-tube/j-tube and feeding tube management, epidural and PCA management, oral/nasal suctioning, HOFV management, Alaris and Medfusion pump management, and bedside procedure support (note: manager has shown flexibility on EVD, ICP, ECMO, and CRRT experience)
- One professional reference dated within the past year required, from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN
- Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration

- Candidate's permanent address must be located more than 50 miles from the facility; local candidates are not accepted
- Candidates who have worked a permanent position at any AHSE facility must be separated for at least 1 year before being eligible
- First-time travelers may be considered on a case-by-case basis with manager approval depending on current staffing
- Holiday coverage is required; expectation is to work the holiday itself and the eve and/or day after, every other holiday while contracted
- RTO requests require manager approval; candidates with significant time-off needs may be asked to extend their contract to accommodate
- Orientation consists of a NEO course plus 2 days of departmental orientation
- Robust unit support includes a unit secretary, charge nurse, IV/VAT/PICC team, resource nurse, RT, intensivist, residents, APPs, and unit-based educators — all available 24/7
- Scrub color: Navy; long-sleeve undershirts permitted in solid Navy or White only; scrubs must not be tight and tops should be pediatric-friendly; no other organization-branded attire
- 'Bare Below Elbow' policy in the nursery — no watches, jewelry (permanent or otherwise), rings (real or plastic), or artificial nails permitted
