General Laborer

Charlotte, NC

Job Title: General Labor Helper – HVAC & Climate Control Support

Job Description

This contract role supports field technicians who deliver, install, and service temporary and emergency HVAC, dehumidification, and temperature control equipment rentals for commercial, construction, and industrial customers. You will assist with loading, unloading, moving, and setting up equipment such as portable air conditioners, chillers, heaters, and desiccant dehumidifiers, while working closely with drivers and technicians to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable service.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in daily meetings with technicians and drivers to review schedules, work orders, and priorities.
  • Assist with moving HVAC materials and products throughout the facility in a safe and organized manner.
  • Support drivers by loading and unloading HVAC and climate control equipment from box trucks and other vehicles.
  • Accompany drivers on customer deliveries to help set up, position, and connect equipment on-site.
  • Help perform basic “plug and play” setup of units at customer locations to ensure equipment is functioning properly.
  • Assist technicians during troubleshooting and emergency service calls, including rapid turnaround trips to and from the branch when needed.
  • Perform heavy lifting, bending, and continuous movement while handling equipment and materials throughout the day.
  • Follow work orders, safety procedures, and instructions to prevent equipment damage and ensure reliable operation.
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area by returning tools and equipment to designated spaces and following facility safety markings.
  • Support basic mechanical tasks as directed, such as assisting with minor repairs, installations, or adjustments on equipment.
  • Collaborate with team members to complete jobs efficiently, including occasional long days or late returns when emergency situations arise.
  • Adhere to all company safety policies, including proper use of equipment and safe lifting and handling practices.

Essential Skills

  • Basic mechanical aptitude, including the ability to use hand tools and tighten bolts properly.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including heavy lifting, bending, and frequent movement throughout the shift.
  • Willingness to work overtime and handle long days when required, including occasional late-night returns in emergency situations.
  • Basic understanding or exposure to automotive repair, small engine repair, troubleshooting, and electrical concepts.
  • Ability to follow detailed work orders and instructions to support proper equipment setup and operation.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills to work effectively with technicians and drivers.
  • Reliable, safety-focused mindset with attention to cleanliness and organization in the work area.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 21 years of age to be eligible for technician certification and driving responsibilities.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in automotive repair, small engine repair, or basic equipment maintenance is a plus.
  • Exposure to installation, welding, brake systems, or fabrication is beneficial.
  • Prior experience in a helper or laborer role in construction, industrial, or rental equipment environments is advantageous.
  • Comfort working with basic electrical and mechanical systems under the guidance of a technician.
  • Positive, proactive attitude with a willingness to take on tasks rather than say, “that is not my job.”
  • Professional work attire and presentation appropriate for a customer-facing industrial environment.
  • Interest in growing into a technician role within the equipment rental or HVAC/climate control field.

Why Work Here?

You will join a well-established leader in the equipment rental industry that is committed to serving customers, communities, and the planet through innovative solutions and a vast network of locations. The culture strongly supports career growth, with many leaders having started in entry-level roles and advancing from within. You will have access to comprehensive benefits, including medical, dental, vision, 401(k), profit-sharing bonuses, paid time off, and multiple paid holidays and special days such as floating holidays, an inclusion day, and a volunteer day. The organization offers programs that reward engagement, such as an interactive points-based program for health and participation challenges, as well as tool and steel-toe allowances once you become a direct team member. This environment values safety, teamwork, and long-term career development, providing a stable place to build your future.

Work Environment

You will work in a large, climate-controlled and very clean facility of approximately 45,000 square feet, organized with clear yellow safety lines and designated areas for each type of equipment. The workspace includes large garage doors sized for vans, which may affect indoor temperature, but powerful fans help circulate air and maintain comfort. The environment emphasizes cleanliness, organization, and safety. The schedule typically runs Monday through Friday from about 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a hard stop at 5:00 p.m. in most cases and no overnight jobs or weekend work, though total weekly hours can reach 60–70 during busy periods. You will have a 30-minute lunch break, with the option to leave the facility, and two 10-minute breaks during the day. Work involves frequent heavy lifting, bending, and moving equipment. Travel occurs within a regional radius that includes areas such as Charlotte, Asheville, Black Mountain, Shelby, and parts of South Carolina, depending on work orders. In some cases, the van may be taken home or returned to the facility based on operational needs. Appropriate work attire, including the use of steel-toe footwear once eligible for the allowance program, is required to support a safe, professional, and industrial work setting.
