Quality Laboratory Technician

Department: Quality Assurance / Laboratory
Reports To: Process Engineer
Employment Type: Full-Time, Hourly (Non-Exempt)

Position Summary

The Quality Laboratory Technician plays a critical role in ensuring product quality through monitoring, analysis, and documentation of production processes. This position is responsible for verifying that all products meet established specifications while maintaining laboratory equipment and calibration standards. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with production teams to optimize product quality and ensure compliance with industry standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Testing & Quality Control

  • Conduct tests on raw materials and finished products using defined test methods and protocols
  • Perform verification testing to ensure finished products meet established specifications
  • Analyze test results and provide data-driven recommendations to production control room personnel
  • Make adjustment instructions when necessary based on test results and data analysis
  • Authorize release of finished products upon verification of quality standards
  • Conduct testing for verification and acceptance of incoming raw materials

Equipment Management & Calibration

  • Schedule and oversee calibration of all laboratory test instrumentation
  • Maintain comprehensive calibration records and documentation
  • Perform routine maintenance on all test instrumentation and equipment
  • Ensure all equipment operates within specification parameters

Documentation & Compliance

  • Document and maintain detailed records for all steps of the testing process
  • Develop and write clear, concise work instructions and standard operating procedures
  • Maintain, store, and catalog all required test sample retains
  • Ensure all documentation meets regulatory and quality system requirements

Laboratory Operations

  • Maintain laboratory safety, cleanliness (5S methodology), efficiency, and effectiveness on a daily basis
  • Keep laboratory inspection-ready for unannounced customer, management, and executive tours
  • Train new personnel on laboratory equipment operation and testing procedures
  • Cross-train team members to ensure operational continuity

Qualifications

Education & Experience

Option 1:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Chemistry, or related scientific field
  • Minimum 1 year of prior laboratory experience

Option 2:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive laboratory experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in materials or plastics testing
  • Working knowledge of ISO and ASTM test methods and standards
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safe laboratory practices and procedures

Technical Skills

Language Ability:

  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents including safety rules, operating instructions, maintenance procedures, and technical manuals
  • Strong written communication skills for routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups including customers, management, and team members

Computer Skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) preferred
  • Comfortable learning new software and technology

Certifications (Preferred):

  • Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certification or higher
  • Industry-specific quality certifications are a plus

Work Environment

  • Manufacturing/production environment with exposure to moderate noise levels
  • Exposure to moving machinery and bulk material handling operations
  • Climate-controlled laboratory with occasional exposure to production floor conditions
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including overtime and shift work as operational needs require
  • Occasional weekend or holiday work may be necessary

Physical Demands

  • Extended periods of standing and walking throughout the shift
  • Periods of sitting while conducting analyses and documentation
  • Ability to lift and move laboratory samples and equipment up to 25 pounds
  • Manual dexterity for operating laboratory equipment and instrumentation
  • Visual acuity for reading instruments, gauges, and documentation
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but may provide technical guidance and training to other laboratory personnel and production staff.
